    Not yet..........
I have a trip to Europe coming up, and want to visit the factory to discuss some "options".
Convincing the wife to visit Italy on our trip is easy, surviving the ensuing shopping experience is not.

Thanks for the feedback. I prefer to plumb my machines in.
With the user name Bosco Lever, Do you own one?

Some pics of our most recent Pompeii sale in situ. This ones a dual fuel one (gas/electric). Great to see graphics which accurately depict the beauty of this machine!

    The Red works too
    Sure does bf,

Looks better in the metal than in the photo.

I have a 10kg mate coming soon to match it 8-)

    2 Group looks awesome Chris!

re the PID, i actually do use mine, maybe just because its so easy, i surf up and down a range when I get a new coffee just to find the sweet spot. Sure its not a necessity, but it sure is nice!

What Chris said, Just an electronic replacement for the P/Stat in the case of the Lever Group.  These are not a domestic weight E61 styled HX head.

Due to the mass of Brass you need to change the temperature of PID or P/Stat apart from being front panel changeable is of little benefit. When and if the P/Stat on my 3 grp dies it will be getting a PID and SSR retrofitted just to lose the points more so than the PID.

    The Red works too 8-)

Maybe Chris or Galumay could shed some light on the practical aspects of this....
    Hi guys,

For mine, a PID on a HX machine is only ever a means of replacing the pressurestat with a solid state solution.

Gruppo Izzo do it on most (all?) of their machines now.

One significant aspect though is that they react to a change in boiler temp/pressure more rapidly. In the Vivi for example, the outcome is far more sustained steam.

Mal, I am wondering whether it really is necessary. Is it a feature that would be used continuously, or end up being set and forget? Being able to change the temp is great, but given the size of some of the lever machines out there, how long before the change takes place?
    Valid points mate... 8-)

In truth, regardless of the Group configuration, the decision to have a PID Controller or not should be based on other factors; mainly down to whether the machine is a Single Boiler HX machine or a Dual Boiler jobbie...

If the latter, then an argument could be made. However, as you point out, the amount of metal in the Groups of decent Lever machines is so significant that the dwell time while you wait for the Group(s) temperature to stabilise at a new setting, might set aside any perceived benefits. At the very least, one would have to have patience or develop some tricks to speed up the stabilisation time....

Maybe Chris or Galumay could shed some light on the practical aspects of this.... :-?

    Mal.

Not a difficult mod to have done (or do yourself) if you have eyes for a different machine.

I have had some delicious ristrettos from Bar 9 in Adelaide. They have two beautiful old Rancilio lever machines just for this purpose. No PID, and if memory serves me correctly, "Luigi" is not plumbed in either (to ensure the pressure profile sought). But then again, Ian really does know his craft, and one cannot question his passion.
I think if one was to buy a lever, the main task would be to learn how "to be one with the machine" first, and then look at a retrofit.
Still a very valid point. Especially if someone was to find a machine that ticked all their boxes...
