  • Wow! Serious vintage Gaggia

For the curious theres some serious vintage Gaggia on the bay right now. Of the lever and grinder variety. For anyone whos interested in coffee porn.  i havent the international playboy lifestyle quite required (small island, own jet) to consider the machines but I do love to get educated on what I might one day aspire to... ;D well worth a peep-show for the javaphile.

Oooh, nice! That auto styled single lever is an iconic piece of design.

Lovely machine, not sure it really qualifies as vintage - early 80s model.

Pretty sure the OP was referring to the 50s machine Galumay...

        Hmmm... little sceptical about these...

It was a 50s Monte Carlo, already been removed by the seller.

There is now a second, different 50s Monte Carlo put up by a different seller.  :-?

Could certainly be legit, and coincidental. Nice looking machines regardless.

Oh, ok, I found the red 80s Gaggia (advertised as vintage) and assumed that was the one the OP was referring to.

I guess its understandable given the odd restriction on links to feebay here.

            ***sigh***

The few rules we have on CS exist for a reason. Most are historical and were created to fix past problems. The no pimping ebay sales is one of the rules that protects CSrs from themselves, from each other and from scammers.

            Scenario 1.

            BILL posts to CoffeeSnobs:
"wow there is a new Mazer Robur on ebay for $14 is that a good price?"

            Option A
            - Bill is pimping his own ad on ebay to gain maximum exposure and top dollar. If we let Bill do that then 10,000 other ebay sellers will also do it.... every day...forever more.

            Option B
            - Bill really wanted to know if it was a good price but by posting the question on CoffeeSnobs anything up to 20,000 members went to ebay and bid on it. Now Bill will have to pay 6.4 gazillion dollars to win the item worth $2000.

            Option C
            - Bill thought about bidding on it but changed his mind so he posted it up on CoffeeSnobs. Mary was already watching the auction and hoping to get a bargain is now bidding at 6.41 gazillion dollars because of the whole CS had a crack at it.

All the above scenarios will end in tears. To avoid ill feeling we made a rule not to link to ebay auctions. Maybe it should have been a rule not to mention current ebay auctions and maybe it should have been 5 pages of justification why such a rule exists.

I dont think its odd and I do know the intent of the rule 6+ years ago was for good reasons.

Actually when I saw the items yesterday there were two monte carlos listed and two grinders. I ddnt know the blue one had been removed since ( may the seller decided he should be asking for $14k as well.... ). For whatever reaons we are not allowed to link to bay listings and so thats why I jut said theres some nice stuff to see there. I woud have liked to have justed posted the pics witnout any ref to the listings actually. I am always intetested in shiny stuff from the
50s because its so God damned beautiful.

I found all them with keywords gaggia espresso one of them doesnt come up as vintage. Anyway not trying to pimp a listing just sharing some pics for lever interest purposes.

                Sheeze...
Wrong side of the bed this morning?

The ebay rule is not to, and never was to protect the site sponsors.

                As stated...

Fact: That the rule was created before we had paying site sponsors!

If the ebay seller wanted to become a member and post the item for free in the "for sale" section he could set a price and we could all comment in the thread.  The auction aspect changes this.

I know that your intent was to point to something interesting as a discussion topic (and Ive wanted to do the same in the past) but the not so obvious side effect is that someone who hoped to be the only bidder then has to outbid a lot more people.

I think it would be far better if CSrs linked to finished ebay ads for discussion.

I didnt know finished eBay auctions could be linked to? I thought they no longer displayed on the bay. In any case Im happy for the entire thread to be deleted if that makes things better and more in line with the rules. no biggie.

I agree, not a biggie and I didnt care that the thread existed until I read the swipe that I assume was being directed at me.
...which is the only reason I even replied at 2:30am instead of going to bed.

Maybe the rule is bad but it only exists with the best intentions.

My thoughts are regardless of what anyone else might think of the rule, when they have their own forum they can do what they like. Until then, Suck it up. ;D

I had a looksie at these on fleabay myself last night

loved the 50s style of the single group one and the matching grinder

I can see the reason for the ebay rule as well, things like that will only end in tears and shitfights which is not what CS is about

What makes CSs so different to everyone else?? Virtually every other forum on the planet  allows links to Feebay, it doesnt seem to have any negative effect on their members?

Much bigger coffee forums than CS allow it and the sky doesnt fall in.

Again, its patronising twaddle to suggest somehow we have to be protected from ourselves.
Thems the rules, it was spelled out in black and white when you signed on.
I guess its a choice you have to make, accept the rule (as most do) and enjoy the many benefits CS offers, or, if linking to other commercial sites is that important to you move to another forum and link away to your hearts content, your choice.

                              Re: Wow! Serious vintage Gaggia

I frequent three fora/forums (you choose) where primary interests and topics covered are worlds apart. All are based in OZ but invite global participation.
CS and one other forum are sponsored, the third historically wasnt and I think is still free of sponsorship. The other sponsored forum has dedicated sections and threads for ebay type listings and mentions or discussions as well as a marketplace for members only non-commercial sales. eBay links are a major issue in many threads. They pop up everywhere as cross posts to the main thread. The mods, and I know one personally, get RSI trying to keep up and now mostly delete or move whole threads if they become too commercial. This can make following a thread an interesting exercise.
On the non sponsored forum, there is no restriction at all on eBay listings. Some threads are impossible to follow at times. My technique for that forum is to search my topic of interest rather than browse the latest posts.

CS may benefit from a section that linked and discussed eBay and other online sales sites. It would mean more work for mods and risks many more offtopic posts from my experience with other forums. Threads like these would rarely have any historical value and thats a major strength of current CS content.  And most of us are familar with eBay and Google anyway. So its not as if we need such as section.
