What is is im missing then?
I dont know what youre missing. But this is what I have at my disposal:

    1. A Scace
    2. A degree in engineering
    3. An understanding of the "tweakable" points in a HX machine
    4. Countless hours of tweaking and learning what works and what doesnt in various machines
    5. A database of calibration "settings" for different machines
    6. Knowing that I still have more to learn.

My Junior is the same..........zero cooling flush. Somethings I dont need to know and "why" is one of them. There is enough with the other variables to keep me entertained

      Thanks TC & VBM

Here a quick vid of my Giotto today. Left it to idle for 2 hours, and this is the first pull.

P.s. Love the VBM; like how the PID is intergrated into the design.

Thanks for the video ITC and everyone for the feedback on the HX cooling flush.

Agree. Today I removed the black markers and I think it looks even better.

            @Jetblack

Charlie, im sorry if i come across as trying to have a dig at you. Thats not my objective at all. Im just curious - Im a technical guy and i love pulling stuff apart to learn more about them. Im just here to learn more like everyone else - and value your input along with everyone elses here.

            @cjn

Thank you. Thermosyphon restriction. This is the kind of answer i was looking for. I dont claim to have 5-10 years experience. Heck, I have about 1 year with coffee machines. But like everyone, youve got to start somewhere.

*Off topic* Ive recently picked up a La Pav 2 group and will definitely be playing around with thermosyphon restrictors now to dial in the machine.

The most difficult thing so far is trying to break my cooling flush habit
When a good HX machine is set up properly, there is no need for a cooling flush.
Sounds like you have a well set up rig Gavin. Out of curiosity are you saying that even if your machine is sitting idle, say for 2 hours, that no cooling flush is required?
Hmm, dont think my answer is needed anymore, but yup, thats what Im saying.

However, thats not saying Im not envying your kit, White. Its pretty awesome.

I feel that the arrows are required but agree that the clean look is much better. Noice......

No problem. Youve got the basic idea about the HX system, and once you get a handle on it you can tweak these things (if you start with a good enough machine) so that they are an absolute pleasure to live with.

Re: Vibiemme DomoBar Super Double Boiler PID

I think HXs get a bad wrap on the internet and its due to reading articles on the internet that people will tend to decide on a dual boiler because of this - when this doesnt necessarily have to be the case.

                      Lovely looking machine!

Can the Cimbali/Faema HX machines be calibrated?  My understanding is that they do not run a thermosyphon system like an E61 group.

If I reduce the boiler pressure on mine the cooling flush requirement decreases but it is always present.

                      Sorry for the hijack.

                      Cheers

Re: Vibiemme DomoBar Super Double Boiler PID

                        hi All!
Yes we have finally gone with the DOMOBAR Sup2B PID (V3) .. not to say V1 and V2 were not a good unit, but with V3 we just think its awesome.
Vibiemme has been working hard to getting a system that performs and while still maintaining their tradition ie The E61. I believe that the vast of improvement they are calling "Power Management Control System" (PMCS) that maintains the achieved temp stability with or without the service boiler (steam and pre-heated brew water supply function) on. In brief, if the service boiler is off the system automatically regulates variable power (600 w plus 300 w) to each heating element in the brew boiler for optimal efficiency and stability. However having had both V1 and V2 on the ECA test bench in the past, the quality of steam is fantastic.
We hope to hear feedback from those having cured their upgrade-itis!

A few weeks in now with the VBM V3 and Im still completely wrapped and can vouch that its an awesome machine. So long as you feed it good beans and good technique, the machine consistently delivers the goods over and over again without a flinch.

My only negative point is the water reservoir could be bigger. Theres room for a bigger tank in there, but they seemed to have settled on 2L for some reason. Obviously this wont be an issue once I can get it plumbed in.

Im still interested to hear from other owners out there in the wilderness....

Nice upgrade. The VBM is in my top 5 as Im looking to do the same and was wondering if anyone here could confirm the dimensions.

                              The Talk Coffee specs say 270 x 570 x 410mm (WxDxH)

Does the Super DB really sit that deep on the bench?

I know its deep - very deep. i am not sure that its actually 570mm.

The ECA website (the actual importer) says 530mm for the Hx version.
