Not really a dodgy as no duty is payable if the purchase price excluding postage is less than AU$1000.
If its over $1000 GST and Duty are payable on the purchase price plus postage (15% total, plus customs clearance fees.)
Mines in Melbourne, have to wait until Monday now.
Will probably order the L1 soon.

Pucks from todays L-I coffees. Anyone care to comment on their dryness, wetness or consistency?

Another latte, the milk was a wee bit lumpy (not as smooth) this time.

My Wife brought me this print to hang up on the wall above the L-I.

On a side note - My wife wasn't keen on a coffee machine of this size but after it arrived she commented that it wasn't as big as she expected... the coffee machine that is;-)

So if the wife is holding you back from buying a Londinium, I'd just put your order in, wait for it to arrive and appologise later!

So you have a HG-One and planning on a L1 to compliment? You will be the first in Tas to have both no doubt, let me know how you get on as this combination is definitely appealing to what I want.

                • The HG-one shipping costs have subsequently been reduced to AU$90, which brings the total to less than the import tax threshold - so I had no need to do the dodgy. I've been stung $475 by customs before for importing my wine collection and it's still a sore topic

I now have an HG, and he certainly isn't complimenting Miss Silvia, in fact I haven't heard the HG say anything to her so far. How rude! She does make vastly better coffee with the HG than with Rocky, but I'm already thinking of upgrading to a lever, main contenders are the Strega and the L1.

With all the issues regarding shipping, breakage, lack of a local after sales/service agent as well as import tax for the L1 what makes it worth the effort? It certainly doesn't land on the doorstep cheaper than the Strega. Is there something that makes the L1 a superior machine to compensate for all the wringing of hands and gnashing of teeth?

Shouldn't the customs duty be charged on price at the point of export (i.e. excluding international shipping)? If so, as long as the shipping costs are not a 'sham' (i.e. ludicrously inflated in an attempt to avoid duty), they shouldn't matter. Maybe things have changed since I last cared too much.

                    • I picked up my L1 at the factory in Birmingham and took it home in my car. I didn't use the box, assuming the car springs would be gentle enough but when I left the channel-tunnel-train I bumped over a threshold intended to keep drivers from speeding directly off the train. Nothing damaged but once home, I did need to re-fasten two bolts to prevent leaks. This seemed stressful but with the right size spanner it was a piece of cake and I was pleasantly amazed that Reiss was ready at his side of a video session with my laptop in front of the machine to guide me if necessary (which wasn't necessary). I took a few pictures at the factory:

Sadly, no. Customs duty and tax is calculated on the landed value of an article, which definitely includes any costs related to transporting the article to the entry port.

Given the Strega has a RRP of $3350, I am pretty sure the L-1, landed, is significantly cheaper.

Of course it is Bosco. It's supplied via an Australian network with all costs paid and parts and labour warranty from a local dealer. As always, apples with apples

                              Not by much.

L1 tank and pump option with shipping costs to AUD is approx 1625GBP = $2387AUD + $572AUD(customs/duty) =$2959AUD.

By the time you factor in local backup/warranty + the fact that the street price of the Strega will probably be better than the RRP, then they are pretty even.

Please correct me if my L1 landed price estimate is wrong.

In pure $$$ sense I believe it is. Anyone care to post a real "on the kitchen bench" cost? The point I'm trying to make is that money isn't the only cost in the real world. Everything has a cost if, like many of us, you're overworked, have a busy and complicated life and you're already totally overloaded with bureaucratic wrangling.

What I'd really like to know is the comparison between the 2 machines in espresso making capability, so I can come to the conclusion whether it's really an option, or whether I'd be better off buying a Strega from a local agent.
