No problem, you've gotta be happy with your purchase

Hi Shapeshifter, heres the photos. I must admit i was a tad dissapointed with the unpolished welds on the drip tray when i unpacked it, but i'd forgotten about them until i saw chokkidogs photos as you dont see them when using the machine or emptying the drip tray. I understand the inside welds would be a bit hard to polish out, but the underside ones would have taken 10 minutes you'd think? (only my completely inexperienced opinion).
    Cheers
    James

James I'd love to see you photograph the same parts as what chokkidog has for a direct comparison.

    Londinium L-I

Congratulations and thanks for the report. I ordered an L1 about a week ago and look forward to its arrival. I have ordered the tank & pump option but will most likely plumb in both the water supply and the drainage.

    Hi Roz,

The box was completely undamaged and dry on arrival.
The only damage was the scratch in the PF handle (caused by the group handle rubbing against it, in the same small cardboard box, even though they were wrapped in meshy protective stuff) and a tiny little depression in the driptray grate, caused by the top half of the group (in it's own cardboard box) bouncing i guess in transit, i think a piece of thick foam over the grate would fix this (or removing the grate and putting the group box in the driptray itself). the dint will probably press out with my thumb though.

I emailed Reiss at londinium when i had assembled it, and he called me within 1/2 hour (it must have been 7 or 8am in london, i'm very pleased with the level of support) to discuss any issues and questions I had about using the machine. He has offered to replaced both of the damaged parts as well. And he was very helpful in suggesting tamping and grind, whether to fiddle with the pressurestat etc.

I've pulled 5 shots, 2 last night (didnt sleep all night) and 3 this morning, i'm buzzing.
First was a gusher (surprising since my old saeco used a really fine grind) but it was still really yummy ( i was using the londinium malawi beans)
and the following ones have all been great and are constantly improving.
I'm using the naked PF and could get a lovely tiger stripe with a viscous central pour on the second espresso and all pours since, with lovely reddish flecks in the crema.
I keep tightening the grind on my HG1 and currently have about 10 sec pre-infusion with 27 sec pour for 35ml from 15.8g pre-ground beans (i've never been able to achieve this before on my old crappy saeco)

The flavour is intense, sweet, with well defined flavours that linger for ages without tasting burnt or leaving an unpleasant aftertaste, I'm very very impressed.

I've emailed Reiss a few times with little tidbits of feedback on the machine, and he always responds quickly and takes what I say onboard, which is really nice. He enjoys discussing his pride and joy and it really shows.

I greased up the piston with the londinium grease on install, and have heard absolutely no creaking etc, i do recommend buying some grease to have at hand during installation just in case, as i thought my piston was a tad dry, but it did have grease on it.

Theres just a tiny little bit of flex in the front panel when you pull the lever, but bugger all really. The machine doesnt move about on the bench at all when pulling the lever, so you dont have to stress about having a hand on hot metal etc.

I struggle removing the driptray just a bit, as the first time i'd let it fill with the 500mls of water used to pre-heat the group on first use. Tilting the driptray out was impossible with a lot of water in it, so i had to use a cup to remove some first. I've managed to improve my technique and can get it out pretty easily now, but you still have to tilt the driptray a fair bit to remove it. But then again if you use a milk jug to collect the 500mls of water thats run through the group at startup, you barely cover the base of the driptray after making 5 coffees and rinsing cups etc, so tilting to remove the driptray probably isnt such an issue then.

I may consider installing a drain when i plumb my system in eventually though, time will tell.

    cheers
    james

Nice to see! pulled any shots yet?

Was the scratch on the PF the only issue on the arrival?

Chokkidog! What a good friend you have to loan you an L-I I hope you are as pleased with the results you get as I am with mine. It will take some experimenting with grind to get the correct cup.

    Cheers!

Look out for the posts in a new thread....... it'll be called something like 'Londinium 1 ....the Luxe Edition'
    or something equally original!!

    Cheers!

Yes, it does have an anti-vac valve for those who were wondering. No need to bleed off false pressure :-) This mornings coffee was quite acceptable for a 'just woken up and brain still not functioning correctly' coffee. This afternoon's were better as I'm getting better at a few things that I haven't done since I last had a 58mm group.

Chokkidog, it will be interesting to read what your thoughts are on this machine. I know I've got the new toy bias at the moment, that and I prefer lever espresso to other machines to boot!
