  • Got the steaming milk right. Just patience and a slightly different hand-wand position. The R58 has huge amounts of steam. I used the 1.2 nozzle and the boiler pressuer remain just under 1 bar.
Looked up an old thread and reference to Talk Coffee on boiler care and will now take off a cup of hot water possibly daily to refresh the water in the boiler. I had read somewhere that using the hot water for tea was not a good idea but I think this referred to using the machine as a kettle!

Update: boiler water was black on an older Giotto PID that is 15 months old. It's now been fully refreshed and is nice and clear. Memo to self: refresh water often!

    • Oh man...
That makes my Silvia look so old and tired....

      • My thoughts: if you have Silvia working well, make great coffee and know the routine - stay with her.
If you upgrade say to a HX machine plus they are so different that it is very hard to go back to Silvia.
So if you get upgraditis make it a big jump.
I admire my Silvia, never had any problems with her, but I moved on and now don't know what to do with her

        • Interesting reading your experience. I went form from a Nemox (like a Lelit/silva) to an Faema/Cimbali and then E61 group and still regularly use the Nemox in between at work. Yes they are all different but I find it easy to swap between them and get great results. Once you know the individual machine it should be easy.

A HX/DB machine has the bonus of concurrent/instant steam which is great especially if making a few coffees.

          Cheers

          • artman, to be fair to Silvia, I make coffee at work for some yoga folk who use the hall. I had 10 coffees to make, the old Giotto sprung a leak ( now fixed), i had Silvia there but there were too many flat whites for me to get my head around! I miscalculated on the reservoir forgetting the flush after steaming gobbles up water! Ran out of water but fortunately the PID temperature display alerted me. No damage done!

I respect all the responses I’ve had on this thread, albeit the occasional disagreement but there are technicians out there with differing views on exactly how the rocket should function out of the box. Spoke to a friendly tech from dimattina (espresso project) and we were on the same page when it comes to the levetta having more than just the ON and OFF position, meaning that there should be enough play on the switch to have water through the grouphead without the pump kicking in. I’ve also been told this feature was found on a ’79 faema they had on the bench. So just a fyi to future owners of the R58, if you cannot manual preinfuse and would wish to do so, you can request for the microswitch to be adjusted WITHOUT voiding your warranty if done with the correct people/shop.
Hello Avex, I am another new owner of r58, could you please help to teach me how to make the MANUAL pre-infusion work on R58 ? Thanks

              • From what he says it may need the switch on the brew lever cam to be set back a bit so the valves in the group open but the pump switch is not activated until the lever lift a bit more.
I notice on my lever that there are two clicks before the lever is fully up. It may be the first click are the prefusion valves opening and the second click the pump switch. As I don't do pumpless prefusion I can't clarify this.
With your machine off, see if you get the two clicks with the lever.m
