  • I know that you can use double spout portafilters but how do you tell the Machine that you want to use a particular profile with a double shot basket and double spout? Do you need to duplicate an existing profile but change the volume manually?

Ah, I see. Yes, change the desired volume in the profile. It'll be clearer to you once you are using the app.

      • Thanks. I suspect that I already know the answer but does the taste profile remain the same when going from single spout to double dose basket and spout if the only altered variable is volume?

I think I'm getting confused by your using "double spout" to mean something. To me, a double spout means nothing except "divide this drink 50/50 between two cups"

          If you're asking
"does changing the in-cup volume from (say) 32g to 50g change the flavor?"

          Yes, HUGELY.

      • No, I'm asking how to use something how I would use something like the profile that you've just posted if I were using a double spouted portafilter with 24g coffee to pull two shots?

You'd grind coarser, so that you get a faster flow rate, aiming for perhaps 50g in cup, in about 32s.

          Is that what you meant?

          • With my current machine, I'll use 16g in a VST basket to make a single espresso, 30mls. If we're in a hurry and I want to make 2 cups I'll change to a larger basket, 24g and a double spout portafilter.

Like VST baskets, the Decent baskets have larger holes as the suggested dose increases. So... in theory, the grind won't need to change. In theory, but reality tends to require some adjustment if you want the best possible shot.

                • Decent customer Martin in California shared this photo with me, of his kitchen remodeling, with a countersunk white DE1XL espresso machine.

In the bottom right I inserted a small photo inside the cabinet under the machine, so you can see the very tidy plumbing job.

                    • Hi interested to buy one, just wondering if there are secret importers for Brisbane?
ALso given the latest iterations, it seems more of a reason to go with DE1XL than DE1pro ( more than just the cosmetic difference), having not seen one of these in real life, before spending the money on this, is the DE1pro back panel being open have any additional real downsides like keeping clean, position if cables in a tight home kitchenette environment

                      • I have the XL and the back panel is closed but easily removed due to it being attached by magnets. The magnets are just the right strength so it's easy off and easy back on. Can't comment on the PRO. Either way, buying a Decent is likely to be a choice that you'll be happy with for many years. They really are extraordinary machine and there is nothing that I've seen that can come close to there versatility regardless of the price. Before I bought one they seemed relatively expensive. Having had one now for three months they seem very inexpensive.

                          • Justin Nagelberg's Decent Design

Ultra-minimalist Designer Justin Nagelberg https://www.parallelogr.am/ reached out to me as he proposed to work on a concept drawing for a potential future Decent Espresso Machine.

I've made an animation from the stills he sent me.

There's a lot to like in what he's done:
                            - he's staying within Decent's current design, but pushing it even further, and bringing more design integrity to it
                            - the flip-up tablet design, integrated into the machine, is interesting. When up, it could also serve as a cup holder (though that would ruin the minimalism! <grin>)
                            - he makes an interesting point via email to me that "objects that appear to be more stable generally tend to have a higher perceived value"
                            - hiding the power cord is his recommendation, which we do on the DE1XL
                            - removing screws is also his recommendation, and I agree, and we've done that on the group head as of v1.3, and we use magnets on the DE1XL back panel to avoid screws. Removing screws on the side is likely achievable with more mechanical engineering design work.
                            - he'd like to remove the buttons on the group head, but unfortunately we were forced to put them on as of v1.3 for legal safety compliance reasons, but I think he could make them attractive.
                            - I really like his handle shapes
                            - the drip tray cover design is very pretty, but as stamped metal, it will hold water droplets and require frequent cleaning, which is why we moved away from this design.

I'm continuing to work with a variety of designers, who are making concept drawings for me, and I'll be posting more from this exercise as I receive them.

That's a beautiful design, impressive and elegant.
