  • Lever vs flow control on new machine

Hello all, sorry I have not been visiting the forum for sometime. I am in the market and been considering the Profitec Pro 600 with flow control added. But now wondering about the benefits and beauty of pulling my own shots. Do people have experience of this and how long it takes to become proficient and if the result is better? I like the idea of being able to react quickly to extraction needs and looking to get back to roasting so like to be able to adjust the brew based on the bean characters.
Finally whether the Bezzera Strega is a good choice albeit with HX instead of dual boiler. The Pro 800 is getting up there in price.
    Cheers!

    Welcome back.
I have the Pro 600 and am experiencing consistently excellent coffee from it. I don't yet have the flow control mod but seriously considering it for the opportunity to tweak the pour. As it has a PID you can also play around with the brew temp but that means adjusting before starting the pour, not during.

The Bezzeral Strega is a single boiler lever machine, not a HX or dual boiler. I've never used one so can't comment on performance but I'm pretty certain it can deliver good coffee.

Hi Nobody, there a 2 types of lever machines - "direct" lever (La Pavoni's, Cremina and non-powered Flair, Rok, etc.) where the coffee extraction is directly related to the force of the user pulling down the lever and "spring" lever (Strega, Pro800 + many others) where there is a large spring that is compressed when the lever is pulled down then released when lifted, providing the pressure for coffee extraction.

The scenario you decribe above is a direct lever.

FYI - I have a Pro 800 at home and a flair for travel. Both are perfect for my needs.

Interesting to know the different styles of lever machines. As I am needing to have a workhorse for the morning lattes and hosting, makes sense to go the Pro 600 for most use-cases; and find something like the Flair for my own experimentation…
just learnt Sydney is unlikely to get out of lockdown soon, might need to pull the trigger soon to have something to play with over the weekend

        Thanks!

Just so you know the 600 is a VERY different machine to the 800 and Strega. All capable of pushing out coffee after coffee but the 800 and Strega will be a lot more 'work' to manually pull the lever.

I really would suggest getting a demo before buying one.

Disclaimer: I have an 800 and LOVE IT but lots of people say they wouldn't get one because of the lever style.

Thanks all, I ended up going for the Pro 600, and picked up a Behmor 2020SR roaster so I can frequent Beanbay again 🙂

Good call on the Pro 600. A great machine. Did you end up going for the flow control option? I was considering it +for my Pro 700 V2 but thought it better to get used to the machine before undertaking such a thing.

Would love to plumb the machine but the minister of war and finance will not allow hole in the benchtop...
