  • Buying 2nd hand ECM machines

Hi there, just thought I'd put this question out to how you work out the value of a used machine and whether it's worth buying. I have seen an ECM Technika IV profi, bought late 2013. Will be serviced upon sale at an asking price of 1.4k. I have seen these machines new go for around 3.8k there abouts.
What do you look for in a machine of this age? Is it worth buying a heat exchanger machine of this age?
Obvuously negotiations can happen on these kinds of units but just unsure whether it's a justifiable purchase. I currently own a breville bes920, have owned for about 3 years, and the price of servicing is starting to get to the point that I could almost buy a new one rather than replace the parts that are costing $400+ each service

Hope this hasn't been asked but unsure what to do.

I really want to hold out and get myself an ecm synkronika v3, but the price tag of 4.7k right now is hard to grasp

Being an older model it will not have the PID. The $3800 for a new machine is not relevant.
look for wear on the ears of the group handle. It will also be an indication of wear in the group head.
will be serviced on sale, but by who & will any issues be fixed? Look for an authorised ECM service agent.

Look for general condition, pull some shots & steam if possible. Listen for unnatural sounds, check pressure of steam & brew gauges.

Keep in mind though that all machines will increase in price, so the V3 might not be such a bad idea

Thanks for this response. Yeah I'm weighing up just waiting to purchase the v3 and stick with my bes920 current, or maybe just do an interest free option on the machine also. Have seen the synlr9nika at like 4k-4.8k

Yeah! I have a local coffee machine shop that has the synkronika at 4.5k but unsure if it's v2 or v3 model as it doesn't state the model of it

Get from an authorised service shop as you’ll get 24mths warranty & better service.
        My guess is that’d be a v2

Yep. It's a proper authorised ecm and profitec seller. So I might call them and see how I can go about it. I honestly just want to upgrade once, rather than just be buying machines in between each time

You've got me curious what's costing $400 on a BDB on a regular basis. I've serviced mine myself for the last 5 years and including the pump, brass OPV, brew solenoid, a few group head seals and O rings it's cost less than $300 all up. If you're not going to be servicing the new machine yourself it's not going to get cheaper.

This is getting it serviced for me not buying it myself. I had opc, group head seal, steam wand drip issue fixed and cost around $400 just gone this year. Yes I should probably just do it myself as it'd be a hell of alot cheaper. What I'm saying is parts on the bdb break seemingly quicker than they would on the high end Italian machines I'd assume, as most parts are plastic and not built as well

Oh so $400 one off not all the time? The only thing that matters that's plastic is the OPV, which I replaced with a $50 expobar brass one when I did the pump. The steam valve can be disassembled and have a couple of washers flipped to fix the drip. You might have been charged for a whole new valve. They don't have to be expensive.

FilthySudo when are you looking at the machine?

Just wondering. I saw one earlier today similar advertised, same price. It’s now sold

Ronin i found out its for a v3. I'm trying to sway my partner into letting me get it! I really am still tossing over it and the profi 700,but I'm unsure if I should look into other machines. I thought about hx, but I don't want the temp instability that most come with ( dual boiler being a bit more accurate)

ECM Sync owner here. Not sure if you are aware but the Sync & the Pro 700 are basically the same machine internally. I’ve never seen the 700 in person but am led to believe that besides the obvious visual differences the fit & finish of the ECM branded machines are slightly better. Personally I prefer the look of the Pro 700 but was swayed by the toggles/levers. YMMV, Just my 2 cents

PS. If you are after a DB e61 machine you won’t go wrong with either, other brands I would consider are Rocket, Bezzera, the Lelit Bianca seems like exceptional value and is also well regarded. Too much to choose from ?
