Looking good Tom, the eye cups make a great look!

Now you can relax and enjoy the simple serenity...

Really nice stuff. I've always imagined myself having a few machines to choose from but then I imagine I get some anxiety in deciding what to use.

How do you choose between the Decent and the Lever? Also, how does the Decent Lever profiles compare?

Great question. I'm planning to do some back to back comparisons with the Decent v Valexia on the weekend and will let you know my thoughts. As you likely know, theoretically the Decent can emulate any other machine because it can be set for any temperature at the group head, any pressure or any flow rate at any stage of the shot including preinfusion.

But what it can never emulate is the feeling of the lever.

Yochiya, that is like asking how these new AI computerised sex dolls compare with the real thing! ?

One is a Lever, the other is a machine trying to emulate a lever.

Funny but also some truth in that. Time and place for both? (And ... don't knock it until you've tried it"?)

I don't know man, the modern sex dolls are feature rich and don't complain when you buy more coffee kit...

On a serious note, I've heard this before a few times. Sounds like it's hard to say exactly why but the real thing is just better.

Wish I could rent a Decent for a week...

Out of curiosity, what is the size of the boiler and does it have a drain plug?

What he said. No internal water tank so I have it set up with a 15L water bottle and flojet. Works well. I have it on a smart timer to turn on an hour before I am up.

It is a cracker of a machine.
          I am envious.

plumbing it in is easy. Use some John Guest fittings and run a line from your nearest tap. You can install an inline filtration setup as well or even an RO system. PM me and I will send you a link for some local contacts if it interests you.

Thanks, may be moving house, hence the reason for not plumbing it in just yet. But if we do move, I've be sure and come back to you.

Hey tompoland , I cannot for the life of me find the other thread with the comparison.

it's been almost a month and I thought I'd check in. Hypothetically, gun to your head, you have to choose Decent or Valexia, it's the last machine you ever own. What do you lean towards?

With his case of upgraditis I reckon Tom would pull the trigger and end it all if he could never buy another machine.

amberale , true true ... but my dilemma is that if I bought another machine, my wife would pull the trigger for me :-)

‘Tis better by far to beg forgiveness than to ask permission.

Gun to my head and the last machine I'd ever own: Valexia

        But today is Sunday.

Ask me again on Monday (not that I'm a fence sitter )

And fortunately, I don't have to choose.

I don't have my routine sorted yet for the Valexia. I still have issues with basket size versus dose size, tamper size and technique. This morning it took me four dud pours before I hit the jackpot, then it was three God Shots in a row. I'm 100% confident, that once I get these issues sorted, I'll be able pour top shots 9 out of 10 times.

When I am having my first coffee and it's a work day, and time is tight, I crank up the Decent. It takes all of six minutes from a cold start to ready to pour. If it's the weekend though, and I have time to play then it's the Valexia. Must admit, I've really fallen for her. Just such a sensual (as in "physical") experience.

When visitors want a coffee and I show them the Valexia first and the Decent second and I explain "that's a 1950s style Italian espresso machine and that's a 2020 Silicon Valley machine". Then I ask "which one would you like your coffee from?".

Not surprisingly the Valexia gets the nod every time. Then, when I am ready to pull the lever, I ask them it they would like to do the honours and they jump at the chance. I think that response sums up what I love about levers ... the undefinable enjoyment of the mechanical, physicality of the method.
