Hi Greenbe, I have a E98 S1, and will try and talk you through the problem.
The E98 is fairly simple and robust heat exchanger type machine, but there are a number of things that could possibly cause a reduction of the flow. These are basically: a problem with the pump; a restriction in the suction feed line or water filter; scale and other blockages in the pipework; leakage through a faulty pressure relief or solenoid valve; or a build up of crud in the brew group/shower-screen. Which one it may be depends upon the history of the machine, and the amount off regular or scheduled maintenance it has received. It would be a matter of checking these things and ruling them out one by one.
However, the first place I would check would be the easiest - a gummed up group head. If the machine hasn't had daily back flushing and monthly cleaning with a chemical solution, a build up may have blocked the ports or shower screen and reduced the flow. If so, you could try removing the the screen and clean it, and the area above it, and then use a blind basket and cleaning solution to flush out the area. There should be plenty of videos on the internet on how to do this.
If this is not the problem, could you come back with some more information of the problem, like: was it suddenly worse, or did the flow gradually reduce; how long have you had the machine, and has it been regularly descaled; does the pump sound like it operating correctly; when pulling a shot, can you hear the solenoid "clack" and can you see any extra water flowing into the drip tray; has the water filter in the tank been changed recently; when you are pulling a shot, does the water level in the boiler rise; and did you notice any other noises or problems prior to this.
Cheers, Stavros.
