There seems to be no dedicated thread for Strietman so thought I should start one after finding this video.

A well known Coffee Influencer using their Strietman CT2 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrqWM2TVtiQ

Looks absolutely beautiful in the video.

You got me! Ha ha. I started watching and wondering who this "coffee influencer" was. Good looking bloke!

Wait...so is the coffee bar 338's or Tompoland? Had hoped it's someone in Sydney not Noosa!

That is Tom's bar, which has probably seen ten grinders and quite a few machines - and that is just the last 12 months!

Nice! No shortage of nice toys on CS. Curious if there's opportunity to meet up and calibrate in-cup taste descriptions/preferences. Having geeked out on coffee in Asia, Europe and San Francisco, everyone/region's preference are rather different. So until one can baseline to some bean/roast level/gear...it's hard to know what people are saying.

Is there a bit of flex in the frame when you're pulling the lever?

A tiny bit. But they come with a warning not to bend them so I guess they can flex too far!

Love it...budding influencer in the making! Curious, what is that device to left of your spring large lever? and which lever machine is that?
Between your Decent, spring lever and manual lever, you have a world of opportunity to explore. Only toy left (to your already generous bench) would be a quality conical for a variety in cup.

What roast level do you normally drink? That cup looks med-dark to me but hard to tell.

Ah...I've seen that OSMA...not sure I'm convinced. Valexia looks fun. Streitman is on my 'lust list'. Just don't have the time and frankly space (don't let better half read this) at the moment. But glad you're enjoying it all! Why not!

Roast level was Dark but now its medium and light. Funny thing is I used to love dark roasts but in the last few weeks they all taste a tiny bit burnt. I dont think its the bean changing, more my palate. I only drink espresso/lungo/ristretto so no milk.

Re the Osma: I'm convinced! It makes the only cold brew I've tasted that I actually enjoy. A summer drink for sure. I fill a glass mug with ice cubes, grind a little coarser than for the Decent and 90 seconds later I have a truly delicious cold brew coffee.

tompoland i recall you roast your own? who do you buy from as reference or which roaster do you know well? If you like black only drinks and enjoy med-light, have you tried Artificer? Check them out. They're the only roaster i've found that does US med-light and clean finish. Which is rather different to what Oz roasters usually call med-light and the typically roast for milk. You may enjoy it! just pull longer and faster ie. ratios of 1:3-5.

Amberale, are we going to get a photo of your Streitman? I think it might be the only other one on the forum.

  • #7
lemoo still got the Decent, Osma (cold brew), Streitman CT2, EG-1 (grinder).

Sold the Valexia to another CSer because I moved and didn't have the space to house it as well as other machines on back order arriving in dribs and drabs over the next few months (including a 83mm conical CleanFinish will be pleased to know). It took me a while to figure out this espresso thing e.g. 8 grinders in 2021 (not the 10 that 338 so outrageously suggested) but in the process I've learned that I get a lot of satisfaction from trying stuff and passing them on at reasonable prices to other CSers.

Yes, it's expensive but I've a brother who died at 31, a mother at age 56, and another brother who had a stroke and lost use of the right side of his body. So for me, I don't care if it's expensive. Can't take it with you and all that.

My wife is supportive because the deal is that I can buy whatever I like so long as it fits on my coffee island (hence the buying and selling) and so long as I stay off motorbikes (I used to race a superbike ... badly ... my team nickname was Sir Crash-A-Lot).

ooh what machines do you have coming? will be interesting to hear your thoughts

you got some other 83m conical coming thats not the Key right?

that's a good way to look at it and a great policy re coffee island real estate

  • #8
Hey lemoo correct: not the Key although that looks great. A Malwani Livi is on its way from Germany (I ordered it June 30 and it's finally made it's way to Frankfurt Airport). It is a 83mm conical hand grinder to pair with the Strietman CT2. Both being very manual machines, I thought they would fit together nicely in a hands-on-experience pairing.

Also on the way is a Portapresso Air PG that I ordered last week (@Gavisconi007 and @Beanz. are to blame for that, assisted by egging on from @amberale - I blame him mostly).

Then there is the X-Bar due around April some time (kickstarter project). Like the Portaspresso, the X-Bar is a compressed air espresso machine, also with a really small footprint.

And an Odyssey Argos lever with both direct lever option and 6 and 9 bar spring options which I'd expect around May/June.

Then a Nurri Leva S.A. should be here in the third quarter but not holding my breath for the arrival date on that one.

There was another kickstarter project I backed called the "Knob" hand grinder. Really, the words "knob" and "hand" should not be mentioned in the same sentence but don't blame me, I didn't pick the name.

I'll need space on the coffee island when the Nurri arrives so there will be items going up for sale here. Most likely the Argos and the X-Bar and maybe my Flair Pro (if the Portapresso lives up to it's reputation).

And yes, limiting the machines to whatever fits on the coffee island idea keeps me honest and keeps the machines coming and going! I really don't want to be a collector.

      I am totally innocent.
I have no doubt you will blame me for a raid on classic levers when you see my beautiful new/old Caravel.
If I had truly influenced you (Tin Tin hairdo etc) you would have an ACS EVO leva on order.

Oh wow...first time seeing the Malwani Livi....rather pretty pair with Strietman. Need to google the other toys you mentioned. Most I've never heard of. Hand Knob especially ; )

  • #9
oh wow yes the Livi would pair really well with the Streitman, they both look stunning

and yeah the Nurri looks great too. I remember someone mocking up some renders of a DE1 that had very similar panels that looked really good too

either way that's a great list of coffee paraphernalia coming in tom!

Looks great, did you clean it up since you getting it? Looks better than when advertised. What is a Kelpie? Like to think it is an Aussie invention, but then it could be an award you won for a working dog.

I lost my dog last year and haven't gotten around to burying the poor buggers ashes yet.
So he is over seeing the coffee station.
It took me half a day to polish up the CT1 when I got it.
There was also a bit of repair to the handle required.
I have finally received a full rebuild kit from Wouter and I will pull it right down as there seems to be some verdigris on the brass behind the shroud and around the heat elements.

        Condolences about your Kelpie.
The half day polishing was absolutely worth it.

I have a video of one of my first pulls that I will try to post/link this evening.
The grind was way too fine and it took quite a lot of effort to pull.
The main point of the video is that there is absolutely no flex visible in the frame of the machine but a little flex in the handle/arm.

        Good to know.

I didn't mean to start a whole flex review with my previous comment.

I love the vibe of the CTx's and am seriously considering investing in one as a retirement present for myself.

If you don't polish does it develop a nice aged patina or is it something that's best kept shiny?

        Cheers

    • #13
      Hi SanderP.
      No hassles at all mate.
I only mentioned it because you asked and I happened to review my video.
I was amazed that the frame didn't move at all.
      That said, mine is a CT1 and Tompoland's is a CT2.
Wouter modified the design to get an extra few mm of space between the portafilter and the tray so maybe the CT2 has a touch of flex that the CT1 doesn't.
I must say that it is very, very stable.

Wouter recommends a very light smear/polish of an acid free yellow grease that I haven't yet been able to source in Oz.
My current experience is that 15 minutes every 3 months with a soft cloth and some good copper/brass polish would keep it immaculate.
It might need a little more attention if you live by the sea-side.
I highly recommend retiring, just don't do what we did and buy a farm.
I also highly recommend treating yourself to another espresso machine.
The Strietmen are fantastic, I am hoping that the Argos is just as good and who knows what the Londinium will be like.

For what it is worth, I am setting up my new-to-me Caravel before it goes off as a surprise long term loan.
The Studmistress said she prefers its looks to the CT1 but she is a lover of curves and all that 50s styling.

One conclusion is that temperature is more stable when the boiler is full. Fluctuations are wider with less water. For example, when I have the boiler only half full and the temperature set to the maximum of 96 degrees it will go over 100 degrees and of course that means it is boiling.

I have a Testo scientific thermometer and I have often left the probe in the water for the hour or two that the Strietman is on each day. The fluctuation seems to be around 2 - 3 degrees (1 to 1.5 either side of the temperature selected on the dial) when the boiler if full, which is good enough for me.

FWIW the last couple of days I've added a weber bbq thermometer as well and it typically measures the water up to a degree hotter than the Testo. The Testo is probably more accurate but at $240 versus $30 for the weber I think the latter is fine should any one want to be as anally retentive as I am. (I don't envisage using thermometers long term, I just wanted to know what was going on with the temperature of the water in the boiler.

https://thelevermag.com/pages/issue-3 has an article on the Strietman and did temperature test an found the fluctuations greater than I did but I don't know if they were measuring a full boiler.

Bottom line is that it's best to keep the boiler 80% or more full. Its pretty easy to top it up and I typically have two espressos a day from the Strietman so top up is always less than 100ml.

Update: the temperature fluctuation is actually 4 degrees when the boiler is full. I did a longer test because the Lever Magazine mentioned 4 degrees and dang it, they were right. Still, 2 degrees either side of perfect is close enough for me.

I'm sorting out my new-to-me Caravel and its fluctuation is more like +-7C.
I think it is a bit better with the lid on firmly but that makes it more difficult to monitor.

Minor update. The gap between the shower head and top of an espresso cup is narrow and so it's hard to see the pour without going into some version of a Downward Dog yoga pose.

By removing the round drip tray and placing a double layer of the non slip mat stuff (for draw liners) in the base, the drip tray now sits flush with the stainless base that houses the twin pillars supporting the boiler. That means I can sit a weber shot mirror snugly between the pillars and get a very good look at the pour.

Unlike most other espresso machines, simply sitting the shot mirror next to the machine doent work due to the narrow gap between the shower screen and the cup. By elevating the shot mirror, I get a clear view while standing upright.

Ah that would be the Puqpress Q2 automatic tamper for 58mm baskets that I use to lessen the load on my arthritic wrist. It doesn't need a spirit level but I used the spirit level when I was testing my tamping technique with smaller diameter baskets before I discovered self levelling tampers and the base of the Puqpress just became a convenient place to store it. It's been sitting there for 9 months I guess. Frankly I think I stopped noticing it 7 months ago.

(If I was smarter I'd put WW sticker on the spirit level and sell it for $200)

The folks on the Kafatek forums rave about the Inker Ishcia cups for the Strietman by the way. Super thick porcelain and very low profile that might make it easier to see with the shot mirror.
