I am facing a similar dilemma. Have a giotto evolution rotary, have the chance at a very well priced linea mini, no mods.

Things that interest me as to which would be better.

    workflow

Plumbing in differences (giotto I can do a line pressure pre infusion, linea?)

taste in the cup and quality of the shot assuming no mods am i really looking at any difference here?

If i "need" to mod, what should i do on each, ball park cost of doing so?

    any other thoughts welcome.

I drink milk, but I roast, lightish to dark and like dabbling in espresso, its very much on the to do list.

A dual boiler *may* benefit, but only if you prefer your espresso (when you drink it) to be light roast. If you're looking for body, chocolate and any darker notes you will be fine with a well-sorted HX. Waste of time buying a V12 if you're only ever going to take it to the local shops for that carton of milk.

Like Gregeeh mentioned, the sync is a better option than both. But hx machines these days have come along way than what hx used to be like in terms of temp stability compared to a dual boiler machine. The dual boiler will just be more temp stable and you will be able to pull shots back to back to back to back quicker. It comes down to preference. Ecm and profitec are both owned by the same company, just 2 different branding within, one just makes a slightly, I’d personally say lesser quality built machine (profi) and the ecm seem to make a few more finer, nicer details shine. Plus you also have the differences of levers and knobs for steam and hot water, so that cost also comes into play. Levers feel great, but the knobs you will have more adjustability in using half pressure steam or even 1/4 without having to hold the lever down to get your req, but then again you can adjust steam temps to have slower pressure at full etc etc. I’d suggest seeing them in person or trying to test them, but if you buy a dual boiler, you won’t feel the need to upgrade or want to upgrade as quick( I’m sure some are quite content with their hx, don’t get me wrong!) but Tompoland has owned a lot of machines, including the sync so he has a very good opinion on options

If you're thinking about DB then the ECM Synchronika V3 is in the same price range.

I just bought the Technika V profi and installed the group head thermometer and already had the flow control as well only make 2 milk drinks aday. The ambient temperature changes the temperature in the group which you can adjust by PID or different roast temps, i think the double boilers PID measure boiler temperature as well not in the group head could somebody quote on that. Its a lot of fun doing different temperatures and profiles just very small different tastes.

i think dual boiler is the go since both the machines I listed are similar prices

I change regularly but only because it's super easy. If it was convoluted in any way I would probably not.

PS today's overkill quickly becomes tomorrow's normal. (Or ... at the very least it postpones upgraditis for a bit more)

You'll need to change the PID temperature if you move from different roasts - light, medium and dark

started a topic Dual boiler or hx

    Dual boiler or hx

Ok I have read way too many reviews

I am looking at a ECM technika rotay or Profitec Pro 700

2-3 coffee a day so know the dual boiler is over kill

How many people actually change pid temp on the group? As this is the only real reason i could justify the dual boiler machine?

Working...
