  • GS3 MP group head spraying

    Hi all,

I recently noticed that I seemed to be getting ridiculous levels of channelling, all seemed fine with the machine and I thought my technique had gone to crap, so... I spent ages doing everything to fix my technique. I finally decided to take another look at the machine, and realised that after an initial period of regular looking pressure, this happened:

Don't supposed anyone has a clue what would cause this? Nearest service centre is 300km away, so want to see if there is something I may be able to do before booking a service and a 4 hour one way drive...

    Thanks,

    Z...

Is this a problem with calcification? Does the machine/showerscreen need descaling?

The shower screen is brand new - it's an IMS precision screen.

Can't say for the rest of it, though. It's about 4 years old, gets maintained every 6 months, and it basically in terms of use, is on usually about 12hrs/day, and approx 10-20 cups/day.

I use Everpure Claris filters for water treatment. It's currently running off the tank, though usually it's plumbed in (current location is temporary).

Happy to provide any other info if needed.

      Thanks,

Single filter or Dual phase or more ?
And I take it youve not only observed but complied with the LM water specification for the 4 yrs of use?

LM specify it clearly. Most users dont achieve the spec stated.

I could be wrong but to me Id be following the Brew path back from the screen as it appears scaled up.
And also from the water inlet as well.

was the boiler emptied prior to this?
Maybe you need to bleed the group?

You may be right - hence why I'm trying to get tot he bottom of it. We've been using the Claris filters for the whole 4 years with constant testing -, of course, that's based on the test strips LM supply, There may be a proper device that lets you test the water in a better way, but I don't know what that device is called, and we certainly don't have one.

Thanks for the advice - I do feel like it is scale related.

No, but having said that I'm not the only one using it. Will try that.

          Bombora tests water for free.
Of course they also sell filters but someone has to and they have a very good reputation.

Not an option, sadly - I live in Baguio, Philippines (Aussie Expat).

In terms of problem solving, if you switched from plumbed to tank recently, I reckon the most likely culprit will be the solenoid or the water coupling closest to the tank being scaled up.

As with the above comments follow the water path from the tank to the group. It probably won't be closer the group unless you have dislodged some scale and it has travelled up into the brew path.

The other option is to try a light descale from the tank, dissolve descaler (or use vinegar) in warm water and fill in your tank and then run through the group, let it soak for a couple of hours and see if you can break down the scale.
