    hey Chris (TC)
Just wondering if you wouldnt mind running through a brief comparison between...

Wega Mininova rotary AND La Spaz VivII

    on:

    1. espresso performance (intra and inter shot)
    2. steaming performance
    3. overall build quality (internal and external)

i guess im not sure what to do about the old hx vs db issue, but thought this might be an interesting comparo of suitable for home rotaries

    thanks so much

    No worries Aaron...

Ill get to work on it once I have your 50,000 word minor thesis on the relative merits of different dosing techniques in relation to group anatomy and thermostability of the 10 most popular commercial espresso machines. :P

How about I write a thesis on "How roknee gets more confused when he finds out another machine to add to his list of possible machines, when hes gonna settle for a Minore in the end anyway?"

haha, sorry mate, I couldnt help myself.

          nice on Dan. ;D

          how about

"Brewt-ality: Selfless desire for globalised espresso utopia, or hidden agendas? The case of Dan"

BUT i am swaying AWAY from the brute and TOWARDS the Spazzy (well, who the hell wouldnt?)

But of course this is all budget dependent, and at this stage, im not sure where it is capped.

when my heart was set on the brute, i hadnt really considered rotary plumbed as an option.
now i reckon id be mad(der) not to go rotary. if i bought new from chris, there wouldnt be ALL that
much difference b/w a plumbed rotary brute and spaz, and given the high praise for the spaz,
this is where i would have to go (im preparing myself to win this discussion with my missus)

now i know that this dissapoints you dan, as you were hoping for a new member to join your ranks
and talk brute talk, but alas this just may not end up how you wished. yes, it is sad, and lifes full of
ups and downs, so maybe we can talk more about this change of life events (58 v 53 mm pf) over
some bella or estate at the Big V.... :P

Haha, yeah I thought your allegiance may be swinging. Its not an easy choice though mate, especially when youre throwing those kinda bikkies around, and what you may be able to get with a few more. Trust me, I know the process.

Looking forward to heading Venez way when i get down there later, and seeing how youre gonna fund a GS3

did u like MY thesis on Dan thou....?

yeah i think im definitely capped at the vivII (and that may be a craaaazy squeeze) then theres the plumbing expense too...

i reckon the GS3 is one of those never will happen propositions but you never know whats round the next corner...

                        hey dan
was waiting to hear from ya!!!
yeah, i am REAL fortunate that the viv fell into budget and it seems like a sturdy and serious performer.
definitely pics to come. should be arriving tues and hope to have the plumbing done tues eve, but will see.

ill probably need to tell the plumber whta connections he needs, and i also want to figure out a drain option if i cant drill thru the benchtop. if i cant cut thru the bench then ill have to drain out thru a tile in the splashback behind the machine but that will mean the drain line wont have a drop (ie itll be horizontal) which is not cool, so well see.
i think my wife is ok with chopping A hole in the benchtop but dont know if i need specialised equipment to do so, or a specialist stonemason.

                        anyways updates will come

                          Re: rotary comparison

Aaron, I reckon you could plumb it in yourself mate. Piss easy.

Assuming your existing water line going to your sink is 1/2", just grab a 1/2" tee connection, pop it on your cold water inlet from your sink. Get the suitable reducing connections and nipples to 3/8", add a 350 kPa pressure limiter (ask Milton if he has any spare). Connect using a 3/8" hose to a water filter and from there youre done. 15 minutes work. All these things can be had from most plumbing stores like Reece.

Regarding the drain pipe. No big deal if the drain pipe runs horizontal for a bit. Most commercial machines have a drain pipe running horizontal till it can get to the hole in the bench anyway. Sure you want to cut through your stone bench top? You can do this yourself too. Just run to your local Bunnings or hardware store and grab a stone cutting hole saw bit at a suitable diameter, chuck it in to your drill and go nuts.

                            hey dave
cheers for that info. i think ill still get my plumber mate to help me out and make sure its all cool.
hey do u know if the water filter can sit outside or is it better to sit inside the house (under the bench somewhere)?

re cutting the bench, no im not sure i want to, im going to try the splashback tile route first and see how that goes drainage wise.
anyways what u up to these days?

                            thanks mate

Just chuck the water filter under the bench, screw it in to the wall and bring the water hose through either the hole through the bench or through the backsplash to the machine. Not sure by what you mean "outside the house". Please clarify.

Not doing much these days. On break from my engineering and arts studies....just doing the barista thing...you know :P
