I have just purchased a bellina syphon from sorrentia coffee and am starting to enjoy the new brewing method. I am a little confused however as to the cleaning and maintenance of the filter and glass. The instructions are written in japenglish and are a little confusing. Just wondering how others are cleaning and maintaining thiers (ie do you keep the cloth filter in the fridge in water?)

Re: Syphon Cleaning
Glad you are enjoying the syphon.
as for filters this is what I do:
Empty the grounds and rinse the filter as soon as possible after the brew. Then wash the filter along with the dishes- and place in a glass of water to rinse. Hang from something and allow to dry.
Every so often clean the filter with caffetto or similar- and/or run a water only cycle in the syphon and boil the filter for a while.
I dont put them in the fridge- and I prefer to start with a dry filter. I have found sometimes if the filter is wet - the up-draw can be slow- because the water finds it harder to get past the swollen cloth.
For cleaning the glass- I simply rinse the bottom chamber immediately after use. Every so often I drop a small cloth into the bottom chamber and use a chopstick to swirl it around. The top chamber can be cleaned with the dishes (carefully- do not become complacent- the glass will get broken if you do).
As with most things- early action makes the job easier.

Re: Syphon Cleaning
Thanks for the prompt reply, that is a routine I can get used to. I now just have to get roasting and tasting some SO, the espresso blend I have been using is good but as I have read elsewhere not great for the syphon. The journey continues ;D

Re: Syphon Cleaning
Every Use rinse the lower chamber out and a wipe with a cloth does the job. Upper chamber hot water and a wipe most times, occasionally a wash in detergent then a thorough rinse in hot water will get most of the oils and fines off the sides.
Filters hot water rinse and if they look especially dirty then put a hot water only brew in the Syphopn to get the fines and a bit more oil out. If the cloth is still a little scungey (technical term
) after quite a few brews then I change the cloth for another. Grab a spare pack and maybe even a spare metal filter is easiest.
Weekly (or thereabouts) put the Glass bits and filter and cloths into your Cafetto washing of baskets groups etc.
Storing filters in water I dont but it seems to be fairly commonplace. I am sure part of the fridge/water thing is to try and stop bugs growing on the cloth between brews more than a wet filter/dry filter thing.

Re: Syphon Cleaning
I use Oxymagic on the glass and soak the filter in it in fridge after hot water rinse. Then I rinse filter just before use agin with boiling water.
If not using daily then I dry the cloth filter on top of espresso machine and leave it dry.
Good point Jack, the filter is probably better dry than wet.
Like already mentioned immediate action saves a lot of extra work.
Enjoy
Chris

Re: Syphon Cleaning
I wash the globes in dishwater using a bottle brush in the lower globe, rinse & wipe dry. Since we drink quite a bit of vac brew I keep 3 cloth filter assys in use so we always have a clean, dry filter. The filter gets rinsed under the tap to remove grounds then a quick blast under the S1s hot water tap, blot off the excess water & up on the cup warmer to dry.
When all 3 are looking grim I put some Oxi Clean Free in a small tub, fill with hot water from the S1 & let them soak until the water cools. Same rinse & dry procedure as before.
