Both really different processes and results in the cup. Easy solution buy both
My 2 cents, have to agree again with BF.

2 different methods 2 very different results. My first Syphon was a momentous occasion. The aeropress produces a great aeropress coffee but you are not comparing apples with apples, the 2 methods are just that, different !

Get both and see what you like. For me I enjoy both

Ive got both brewers and I enjoy them equally because of the different qualities in the cup produced by each. One thing I would add re: the AeroPress.... I reckon the brew tastes better with used filter papers than with new ones. Might have something to do with the new filter papers absorbing more of the soluble oils? I dont know really but the results are better, have more body and flavour intensity. Maybe someone should manufacture a fine metal mesh filter for the AeroPress; that would put paid to some of the claims that the filter paper detracts from the quality of the brew achieved....

    Mal.

away where might guide the answers also?

Ive bought my aeropress for travel around south america and asia, and with a hand grinder ive eliminated my need to ever succumb to instant ever again. I personally havent had a syphon coffee yet, but my fiancees uncle used his syphon exclusively until he got an aeropress and now uses that each day so it cantbe all bad. i think its the lazy factor coming into it, with the aeropress being easier to use and clean. I reserve my right to change my mind once Ive actually had a syphon, but for $50 (or $150 with a manual grinder) and being very resistant to a few knocks in the suitcase, Id be leaning towards the aeropress for travel use.

Actually, just noticed you are also from Adelaide. Go to The Coffee Barun, they can make you a coffee using the aeropress before you commit to buying one (and I think theyve got syphons as well)

the Aeropress does muddy the flavours a touch
Yet my wife (not having tried syphon) says that the Aeropress gives a cleaner taste than espresso based long blacks.

She would say the espresso "muddies the flavours a touch".

Not a huge fan of the Aeropress, but it does make a nice brew. I would rather an espresso based drink at home so the obvious benefits of tough and rugged of the Aeropress are not there. For a tough transportable bit of coffee kit they are hard to beat or if you want to take it to work then it will suit that as well. Ducking for cover a little here but in the cup the Aeropress does muddy the flavours a touch and is more plungerish when compared to Syphon or Drip methods.

Allowing that I am a Syphon nut, the clarity of flavours obtainable from a Syphon is what does it for me. In most cases not a very transportable option unless done with care but I did sling a glass one in a bag and take it to wicked Sunday this year and I have a metal one for camping.

So for mine if you want transportable then its easy if you want best flavour Syphon or maybe even Drip

started a topic Aero Press or Syphon - Which one

Aero Press or Syphon - Which one

To all who have used a manual brew method. I would like to purchase either one of the two methods mentioned above to brew coffee whilst Im away. So basically I would like to know which people have tried and if you guys and girls could help my decision making a little easier, i.e. pros and cons of each and taste differences, if any.
