Re: Cloth filter recommendations for CP
Warren,
I really like Harrar as CP. Pulled a few degrees before SC, ground similar to plunger and left 22-24hours.
Of course, I really like Harrar anyway it comes!

I used a course plunger setting with the current 1kg batch I am drinking at present. BUT the ration of beans I used was 1kg to 4.2 ( I think it was 2 lbs to 1USGall ) litres or water. In one of the CP threads Javaphile mentions a pounds to gallons ratio that this works out to.
I am using Genovese Brazil blend and while an Espresso blend it is fairly lightly roasted and rounded in flavour as an Espresso. As CP it becomes BIG and rich in flavour but I reckon it could do a bit more pep or flavour zing from a more out there bean :-?
Off to do a mini batch of CP WOW decaff to try.

Re: Cloth filter recommendations for CP
Im new to the whole CP coffee, i just used a green bean bag(i have lots), put 250g of espresso roasted and slightly courser than espresso grind in the bag, tied it up well and placed it in a 4 lt bucket, poured 4lt of filtered water over it, put the lid on and left it for 24 hrs.
It came out really good, especially on ice, but my family arent fans of it, and one got any tips? eg lighter roast or courser grind?
cheers

Re: Cloth filter recommendations for CP
Muslin is the go. Available from Spotlight or similar places, also depending on your local shops Herbies Spices sell it in their range too (check the delis or speciality spice shops). Cheesecloth is to course in weave and other fabrics may have dye or colour bleed issues. For small batches the Neru Sock from Sorrentina will work a treat but it is very fine so fairly slow with bigger batches.

Couple of things with Muslin it frays like a !@#$ard so any cut edges really need to be sewn and french seamed (fibers in your coffee is not cool) so be nice to your S.O. or Mother or know a bloke that owns a kite shop and can sew or learn how to drive a sewing machine yourself
Rather than just use a piece dropped in the bottom of the bucket while brewing, I have made a conical strainer to post strain the CP. Based on a 300mm diameter hoop with about a 150mm depth. No real reason other than it suited the bit of stainless steel welding wire I had laying around and 12" suits a lot of the bowls and jugs I own.
Make a hoop out of your wire (3mm works well), I used an aluminium fishing crimp to finish off the hoop but lots of ways to do this. Next thing is to make your cone. Calculation page here to make life easy http://www.cleavebooks.co.uk/scol/calcone.htm Think about the volume of wet solids you need to hold when you are working this out.
Cut out the angled bit as scrap dont forget to allow for seams :
French seam the cone to avoid cotton floaties. Then sew the ring in if you like or make your ring and cone so it can be removed for cleaning or replacement.
Last step Strain and enjoy your CP 8-)

Re: Cloth filter recommendations for CP
just thinking the same thing. I soaked the greenbean bag and the ink ran. How should we prep the bag?Originally posted by 6764767672647C050 link=1258853751/3#3 date=1258938464I used one of the coffee snobs green bean bags as a cheese cloth once. The ink came off and onto the paneer.
Anyone know if the ink is food safe? Or if the bag is colour/bleach treated in a way that is toxic?
Btw. The Bolivian Caranavi that is sitting for 24 hours is smelling fantastic after 8 hours.

Re: Cloth filter recommendations for CP
I have been planning something on the same lines too.
I thing I have thought of is polyester filter bags used for bio diesel. They can be picked up on evil bay. The come in different particle filter sizes. The supplier told me that they are food safe.
Yet to try it but if I get some Ill put up my findings here.
