    Re: Aeropress Users...

Great to get all this feedback on the Aeropress clean up and filter use/reuse. Thanks folks!

The camper forum now has a coffee thread which is currently running at about 8 pages long and Im seriously wishing I had shares in Aeropress!  ;D

If youre an Aeropress seller and have had a hike in sales lately...you can thank me! (and I dont even have one!  ;D)

*Edit to add: There are 5 new Aeropress owners! And that is just the ones who have posted to say they have bought one.

Update: Im now a solid filter re-user. Since my last post Ive only used two filters and I make quite a few aeropresses each day. Theyre tough little buggers, those filters.

Good job those who pointed me the right direction, its greatly appreciated.

    Heya,

I guess my shock was thinking that itd spoil the taste a little, a little like re-using cigarette filters.

Im a renew - reuse - recycle kind of guy as well and was pretty happy with them going into the compost... I might have to try squeezing a bit more life out of them. As soon as I finished laughing at the cheesy packaging it all went in the (recycling   ) bin, I must have missed the reuse part of the instructions.

    Thanks for the info

Im a little shocked to find that some people here use the filters more than once, and am interested to find the reason - can a re-user please let me know their thoughts on this?
    Why shocked?

As SniffCoffee has pointed out, the instructions mention that you can.
At first I didnt believe you could wash a paper filter so tried it and they are surprisingly tough.
Secondly, Ive always been a recycler/reuser so it was a plus for me.
At home they get used a few times each, until they get a bit too wrinkled to sit flat (probably my heavy handedness in washing).

If I was using it while away Id probably just bin them.

Erm, well, they wash really well and it seems just a little bit wasteful to throw them away after one?  :-?

The Aeropress instructions also suggest it....quote:

"Two thousand filters use about as much paper as one city newspaper, so you neednt feel guilty about discarding filters.  But you can also re-use each filter many times just by brushing it off under running water.

The choice is up to you"  ;D

The piston and cylinder dont really need washing at all. The piston wipes the cylinder perfectly clean and you can wipe any bits of ground coffee off the end of the piston with ease. If you discard the filter you dont need to wash that.

That just leaves the black filter holder which really should be washed of coffee oils, but I reckon you could get away with 10ml if you had a dish just a little larger than the filter holder itself.

Bottom line is, next to nothing. Ive used my Aeropress and Hario combo on picnic trips and have no complaints.

I use my Aeropress at Uni, where I have no access to paper towel or a cloth.

And it is more then easily cleaned with just the tap.

Agree with all your comments Bullitt. Gave mine a quick wash and it came to about 100-150mls of water all up and that was probably being a bit liberal as I was using the kitchen tap and a damp wash cloth

Yeah I agree with the others,
when camping I only use filter once and throw it in rubbish bag,
press the puck into rubbish bag and quick wipe of the press, then wash at end of day with rest of dishes, etc, so no extra water really required.

Having said that, the comments that the press self cleans is I think a bit hopeful, as I can usually see a line of coffee coloured something around the inside of the barrel, so i prefer the concept of relatively self cleaning. I think they benefit from a proper wash say once a week or so, but certainly they are much better for camping/travelling/at work than some other ways of making coffee.

Switched...Im using a Kyocera hand grinder now. Its a great bit of gear. Mind you, I did check the power usage of the Rocky to see if I couldnt take it with me! But, a big inverter sucks a lot of power, something I dont have a lot of with a 105amp/hr battery and 100watt solar panels. Though, if I was only camping at powered sites, all of the manual process coffee making would be out the door...er tent... ;D

Scoota, what kind of grinder are you using while camping? Or are you packing the grinder away and using an inverter? ;D

Thanks folks! I really appreciate your answers.

Yxoc, thankfully, 60ml is not a whole lot!

    Agree with these Guys,
If camping I would take extra filters (and dont bother reusing like I normally do) and as Sniff says, wipe the end of the piston with a tissue/paper towel. ie. no water at all.

Of course youll still need about 60ml of water to make some coffee...

    Hiya Scoota

My Aeropress has been getting a workout since the Sunbeam died on the weekend....

I have found rightly (or wrongly) you can probably get away with as much or as little water as need be to clean it. I usually give mine a quick rinse and wipe between repeated use and a good wash once Ive finished using it, but in each case it uses signficantly less water than the typical plunger. The filters are disposable, coffee pucks are amazingly solid and the rubber seal does a good job of cleaning the inside of the Aeropress tube, so that saves a bit of water too on cleanup (i.e. you could probably get away with a quick wipe and a damp towel if you were camping)

Ill do a test run in the morning and post how many mls of water I use to clean it and let you know.

    Cheers
