Re: I would like to explore a new brewing method

Just an update! Got an aeropress from Den and after using it for the last month or so I have to say it is quite amazing! It is such a smooth cup of coffee! highly recommend the aeropress.

Ive been playing around with an old stovetop that Ive had kicking around - certainly worth exploring. It appears there is a bit of an art to getting it right.

Muchos fun, and nice interesting brews when it works.

    Too manual, not manual enough?

    What is a coava disc?
Its a metal disk that can be used instead of the paper filters. Google it or check some of the site sponsors from the list on the left. I know that Talk Coffee and Things Coffee (Pullman Espresso) are two sponsors who sell them.

Try a single origin coffee but any good quality, freshly ground should work well.

I have been youtubing and reading reviews of the aeropress all afternoon. It looks and sounds fabulous! I am going to get one!

    What is a coava disc?

Also anyone know of a good sweet coffee that would work well in an aeropress? I will buy at the same time.

For a total set up of less than $20 bucks you can try the first brewing method that is still used today
In fact its probably consumed by more people than all other methods combined

    That method is
    Greek/Turkish

I would also recommend considering an Aeropress with a Coava disk. It is similar size to a plunger, and with the disk, you dont get the slight paper taste. Both available from sponsors.
The Aeropress also lends itself to a few variations in the brew process, info available on line, you should be able to find one, or more process/s, that suit you. It is a relatively light and robust unit, easy to clean, and also travels well.

For some extra cost, you can make some nice brews in a Siphon brewer, but I think they are a bit more space hungry overall, and slightly fragile, in comparison to some other types of brewing equipment.

Finally, dont discount a stove-top, as long as you follow the guides that can be found via this forum, and keep heat low, you can make some nice brews in them. Need to keep them clean, but relatively simple otherwise.

Your grinder would be suitable for all the processes that have been discussed. The biggest variable will be how fresh the beans are, but Im sure you realise that.

Re: I would like to explore a new brewing method

There are a number of manual dripper styles that are similar in principle to the American electric kind you mentioned. The difference  is you pour the water over the ground coffee and it wont keep the coffee continuously hot for you like the American style one. Look up Chemex, Hario V60, pourover. These are all compact as you simply sit the filtration unit on or over the cup or receptacle.

All require some kind of filtration and, while paper is the cheapest and easiest, can affect the flavour - removes some add may add a paper taste. The metal mesh/sieve is another option and there are different brands of these Coava, Bodum, SwissGold etc. They will allow the maximum flavour but you will get some coffee fines in your cup.

If possible, I would go to a cafe where pourover or syphon coffee is available and try/see for yourself. Your profile doesnt say where you live so I cant make recommendations.

Dont forget the grinder. You really want freshly ground to enjoy this brewing method.

Re: I would like to explore a new brewing method

Thanks for your response. I had an idea that siphoning might be a bit of a process. I have been leaning toward the drip filter to be honest.

I actually had one of those american style coffee machines. I think it was a drip filter with a tank attached to the back of it and the coffee pops out into a glass pot for pouring. I dont want something that big again as i dont have the bench space. But the pourovers seem like you can just chuck them in the pantry with the tuppaware.

are there any particular brands of drip filters i should be looking at? also is paper the best route???

Syphons are not quick and easy to master. Not to say its too slow and difficult but syphon users are generally looking for the best extraction, and it is the most interesting method. .

I would try the Aeropress first (with the 008 Coava disk) but I have also used a syphon and a Clever Coffee dripper (CCD). All three have provided some of the tastiest brews I have made.

Be aware that pourover/dripper methods using paper filters can sometimes interfere with the taste.

Theres plenty of info among the forum topics or you can contact any of the sponsors for more info. Sorrentina and Cuppacoffee sell syphons; most sell the Aeropress and others will have some type of pourover. None sell the CCD at present.

I would like to explore a new brewing method

    Hi all

It has been a very long time since i have been here. Im hoping that a few of you may give me some advice. I am looking for a new manual method to brew my coffee. Currently I use a plunger but I would like to try something different.

I know a lot of you recommend siphons. Is this method considered to be quick? and easy to master? The thing about my plunger that i love so much is that it makes excellent coffee without too much fiddling around. Also, someone here once told me that you can get siphons that have the same footprint as a plunger. I need something small as i have a small kitchen and barely any room for anything!

I am also interested in drip filters but i know NOTHING about them. What do i need?

Just to let you know, I drink my coffee black. I am not sure if this has any bearing on brewing method? Also i have a lux grinder which i assume would be fine with any of these?

I will be shopping at CSs sponsors so any info on the best kind of equipment that would suite my needs would be great. I just dont know whats out there or what sorts of things I will need.
