Re: Aeropress grind with Lux grinder?
Love the aeropress. My tips.
Water temp - pour from the kettle into your cup, wait 30 sec then put it in the aeropress. The water has cooled a bit and your cup is warm which will help the coffee hold its temp after brewing. Final temp will depend on the volume of water and type of cup you use (ceramic or glass, thickness etc).
Inversion technique is the way to go.
Grind varies with bean type, but between espresso and plunger.
if the cup is too intense add water, this can really help.

Re: Aeropress grind with Lux grinder?
Yes - its normal.Originally posted by 435548514255540A545249554E5442270 link=1303266646/11#11 date=1303291287I seem to have a lot of liquid escaping before i even plunge the plunger part of the aeropress. Is this normal?
If youre worried about too much going through, try the inversion technique - pull the plunger about halfway down the tube, stand it on the pluger and then tip your grounds into the tube. Add your water, wet your paper filter, press it against the end cap and then put the end cap on.
Flip the whole thing over onto your cup and start pressing!
Theres probably a video on youtube if my instructions dont make any sense.
Also consider getting a coava disk - it lets a little more body into the cup, I think.
Cheers

Re: Aeropress grind with Lux grinder?
Well i made another cup tonight and I must not be waiting long enough after my kettle boils! This is frustrating.
It does taste good with water and sugar tho :P
Love the cleanness.

Ill keep at it.

Re: Aeropress grind with Lux grinder?
No, it depends on pressure (altitude). ~97.7 here where I live. Can still burn coffee though at that temp.Originally posted by 7E686D6D7C7E727B7B78781D0 link=1303266646/9#9 date=1303288817I havent used a thermometer but was always taught that water boiled at 100 degrees C.

Is that a trick question? I havent used a thermometer but was always taught that water boiled at 100 degrees C.Originally posted by 26302D342730316F31372C302B3127420 link=1303266646/8#8 date=1303287711What temp does water hit when it boils?

Re: Aeropress grind with Lux grinder?
Yes, Ive found that with kettles too, though I have one now that you can set for different temperatures and though not totally accurate, is close.
What I used to do prior to that was to pour the boiled water into a jug, then add some cold water to speed up the cooling process.

Re: Aeropress grind with Lux grinder?
mmm sorry Dennis I swear Im not following you
What is said about the temperature is the thing that I think might be the biggest factor in producing bitter coffee.
I have a Presso and it took a while to figure out what I was doing wrong, I kept seeing comments and watching youtube videos where people boiled their kettle, waited 30 seconds and then used the water.
Once it triggered that it was maybe the water temperature I got out the thermocouple and bingo, it actually takes 10 minutes for my kettle to reach 90 degrees not 30 seconds. Ever since then Ive never got bitter coffee
I figure either these people are in really really cold countries or that they really like bitter coffee *shrugs*
I do tend to grind slightly coarser than an espresso grind with the Presso as well most of the time but an espresso grind still works fine through it now that Ive figured out the temperature side of things.
Just a thought

I will make another cup later and try to take more note of the amount of pressure i need too

Re: Aeropress grind with Lux grinder?
Denis thank you! i am so pleased it arrived so quickly. How do i know i have hit the right grind setting??? I have a cup now and it is very clean but when i threw the puck out of the aeropress it broke and splattered in my bin. The one prior to that did not break and it was on a finer grind. Is the puck something i should go by?

Re: Aeropress grind with Lux grinder?
Good to hear it arrived safely.
Unfortunately, there is no magic setting or number for any grinder.
I do know that you will need to grind coarser than you normally do for espresso, so I would try moving at least 3 notches coarser as a starting point. If youre able to press without applying what seems to be a very large amount of pressure, and get an extraction, you arelikely to be in the range.
Try using water that is off the boil, around 90 degrees and dont allow the coffee to steep for long.
Youll probably find some other ideas on youtube.
Hope that helps!

Aeropress grind with Lux grinder?
Hi all
I have just received my aeropress! very excited. I just tried using an espresso grind and got a bitter cup of coffee! I am using a lux grinder. Can someone please tell me what number grind should be used with an aeropress ??? Ive only ever used my lux for plunger and (setting of 10ish) so any help you could give would be great.Tags: None
