Re: Urgent HELP with Moka Pot!
As TG said, suggest you get an aeropress and a coava disk if you are not happy with the moka pot. This is a relatively unbreakable unit that can make coffee as strong as you like, and the coava disk does improve the taste a bit, as well as being re-usable for ever if you keep it clean. I have never had a burnt taste from my aeropress. Also suggest you look up the various posts about the aeropress as it can be used in various ways other than the original instructions, for example you can increase the brew time in various ways. There was two coava disks available the one with the bigger holes gave a taste more like a plunger and the one with the finer holes gives a cleaner taste is probably the easiest way to describe it.

Re: Urgent HELP with Moka Pot!
Hi
There is a brown button in the top left of the page called "Roasted Coffee". Its roasted by Andy that runs this site and posted out soon after roasting. There is a big selection and one or more will suit you to try out. It is much better than Lavazza :-) They will also go well with plunger.Originally posted by 0A2F202A27222721204E0 link=1320057437/8#8 date=1320288147About ordering coffee on this site... is it coming from a company or a person? As in not name brand? Have noticed the sponsors but not had a proper look sorry!
Have a look at the sample pack for sale there and get a 2 cup plunger anyhow. That way you can definately get a taste for how the different coffees compare in a plunger. Mine are just no-name glass ones.

Re: Urgent HELP with Moka Pot!
Italians like a darker roast. Maybe it tastes burnt to you.Originally posted by 5D78777D7075707677190 link=1320057437/8#8 date=1320288147Regarding the coffee, im only using Lavazza because I didnt want to waste money on a good one until id perfected it. This couldnt be the reason its coming out burnt though?
How would you go with a plastic Aeropress?Originally posted by 1E3B343E33363335345A0 link=1320057437/8#8 date=1320288147So if i go the plunger route, do you like the avanti metal one? or prefer glass? I just know so many glass ones break and with my hands I wouldnt be surprised if I knocked it over.

Re: Urgent HELP with Moka Pot!
wow, really helpful replies!
Im torn now, thinking i should give the moka pot one more go.
Regarding the coffee, im only using Lavazza because I didnt want to waste money on a good one until id perfected it. This couldnt be the reason its coming out burnt though? The moka instructions say medium grind and thats the grind i bought. And yep im doing exactly whats been said about filling the coffee and water.
About a Grinder, i totally agree. Actually because the beans i want to buy are 5 Senses. But the problem is I have a medical condition which makes my hands shake (looks like parkinsons but its not), its called a tremor, and my strength and co-ordination is affected. I cant handwrite very well anymore, even typing is hit and miss. So I guess Id want to try one before buying one because I dont know if i could use it, though i would love freshly ground beans. I will recover from this apparently, just not sure how long. One option i do have is someone doing it for me the night before but from what Ive read on here thats a no go.
Yep all im wanting is 2 shots, which is why i watched it vigilantly last time and i got less than that because i took it off earlier as it had been SIX minutes just to get this out. It was less burnt but still burnt. Not even a hint of coffee aroma which would have given me hope but meh.... >
So if i go the plunger route, do you like the avanti metal one? or prefer glass? I just know so many glass ones break and with my hands I wouldnt be surprised if I knocked it over.

Re: Urgent HELP with Moka Pot!
As was said previously, fill the filter basket full, settle the grinds by gently tapping on the bench, no need to tamp. Fill bottom section to the level of the pressure relief valve, but use hot (almost boiling) water from the jug or kettle, put on hot plate or flame at low setting, and leave top open, and watch. The coffee should flow out relatively slowly, if it is bubbling vigorously or spurting, the heat source is too hot and the water is boiling inside.
The reason hot water is recommended is to reduce the heating time, so there is less chance of burning the grinds while waiting for the brewing process to begin, similarly, then only just enough heat is required to generate enough pressure to force hot, not boiling water through the grounds. Finally, while the pot may be labelled as "2 cup" that means about 2 shots not 2 cups of brew, try to extract too much and it will be bitter and burnt tasting.
I would rather have a smaller volume of good tasting brew than a cup full of not so good tasting brew.

Re: Urgent HELP with Moka Pot!
Hi
Before you ditch the Moka try a fresh roasted coffee from CoffeeSnobs here. Someone can prob recommend one that is lightly roasted and suitable for a Moka pot. There is the possibility that the coffee you are using is a very dark roast and maybe a bit old and unsuitable for Moka.
I prefer Moka over plunger as I like a stronger brew.

Re: Urgent HELP with Moka Pot!
Hi Dandelion
I would recommend a reasonable grinder and a plunger - I use a Moca camping, but have had similar experiences to you (it never tastes really that good, even with fresh ground coffee IMHO, but is better than instant) but fresh coffee, freshly ground and a plunger I still enjoy when Im away from the machine. As to the type - I reckon go a glass Bodum style - but theres not too much to go wrong with the plunger system! But get a decent grinder (did I say that before
and buy fresh coffee - and a nice coarse grind - otherwise you get sludge in the cup…

Re: Urgent HELP with Moka Pot!
Thank you for that, Im doing all those things unfortunately.
Its been 4 days and the thing is driving me nuts. I have tried every subtle change and the best i can get is slightly not horribly burnt coffee.
Im going to give up on this method. Luckily I can return it to the store because it "doesnt do what its supposed to".
I dont know if its worth starting another thread or if I should just google, but the only other thing I think would suffice is the Avanti Coffee Plunger. Ive tasted coffee from a glass one before and it was good (well better than instant). Im guessing this is metal for strength and heat.....
Before I make another dud purchase, any recommendations on plungers? 2 cup max.
cheers

Re: Urgent HELP with Moka Pot!
Hi
I have a few Moka pots, some stainless and some aluminium. Mine is also a 2 cup.
* When you fill it have a look for the pressure relief valve - fill to just below there. I use filtered water as you do at room temperature.
* When you put the grinds in the perforated holder dont tamp them down hard - just fill and tap to settle them.
* Place it on the hotplate or burner. I have electric only and do it at full power.
* Once I hear water gurgling out of the outlet I turn down the power and once its within a cm or so below the outlet I take it off the stove.
* You could leave the top open, if it only gurgles out it will be fine but it may spash a bit. Try it to see what is happening.
PS. I actually prefer my Al Moka to the SS but thats a different thread in itself.

Re: Urgent HELP with Moka Pot!
Thanks for your reply,
would it be safe then to leave the lid open? as i cannot hear when the coffee begins to flow... or just stand by and keep opening it to check?
What ive read says this device should make some noise, splurting at least. Mine is not, at all. Does anyone know why? because its new, or only a 2 cup etc

Re: Urgent HELP with Moka Pot!
try starting with hot water.
use as small a flame as possible.
once the coffee starts to flow and is about half done you can often turn the flame off.

Urgent HELP with Moka Pot!
Hello, apart from savouring perfect cafe coffee (which are few and far between where I live) Id been a reluctant instant drinker, something I really only did for the caffiene. Until a friend showed me her new "coffee machine" which I refer to as The beast. She made me an espresso from this machine and I have never looked back, words fail me, i did not know coffee could taste so good. This mamoth thing sit on her kitchen bench as if it owns the place, and so it should. I knew then I had to get my own.... however being desperate for a real coffee, and after, lots of research I decided to get a Moka Pot (stovetop thing) until I can get a machine.
But I need help
I cannot get it to work, 5 batches now and the problem is burnt coffee.
Okay firstly I am using ground coffee, this is temporary, I do plan to get a grinder but not soon enough. But according to all the pictorials ive looked at, it seems I am doing THIS part right.
Same with the water, and Im using room temp water from filtered machine.
Its a 2 cup as im the only user. Put on the lowest setting, smallest gas stove burner.
Timing - confused at first because my moka pot is SILENT so i had nothing to go on. One minute Im waiting, then I look in and its full of coffee! Everything I read says it should start to gurgle and sputter. I tried putting my face almost touching the base and could hear a slight boil at one point but Id like to not need to go to the burns unit any time soon :
SO tell me, is this abnormal, faulty? whats going on here?
Timing, I had to go by what seems to be the standard 5 mins OR when the coffee is about halfway full out of the spout. But that seems to be a moment I cannot pinpoint. The last cup was less burnt than all the others but still burnt and thats all you can smell. What do I do with this issue?
Please dont tell me to buy something else because I cant for a couple of weeks at least and even then id rather make something that should work actually work!
Oh and its aluminium, thats my bad. The only thing I realise could be the issue. But they sell these things all the time or they wouldnt sell them. Mine certainly wasnt dusty so unless theres an island of aluminium moka pots then Im sure people are using them successfully ;D
Advice much appreciated, starting to have withdrawals already.Tags: None
