Re: Which Syphon Brand/Where to buy?
Hello all,
thanks for the various positive reviews folks.
as to the question about the glass used in the Bellina syphons:
I am not exactly sure if the glass is identical to Hario glass. I dont have a Hario to compare it with. If someone can post an image of a Hario top globe I could compare them (especially the seal). I do know that in the past Bellman produced some components for Hario under license. The TCA Bellina does seem to be identical to the Hario counterpart- and the glass is of very good quality: quite thick for this type of syphon. I wouldnt say it is a re-badged Hario as such- as it is certainly made in Taiwan not Japan. I use the wet cloth method to accelerate the draw back and I have not had any cracked glass to date. Bellman products are well made in my experience.
Personally I prefer the TCA style- though the SCA brews just as well- and the storage of the top dome on the stand is more secure. I dont know why I prefer the TCA- perhaps I like the lines more- it also takes up less counter space.
from what I have read one of the finest syphon brands of all is the European made Cona brand. They have very fine glass- and a glass filter rod. Some say this is the best coffee maker available bar-none- as the coffee only comes into contact with glass and water- nothing else. I have a very large Cona- I have not tried it out much as it is so big (7 cups?)- I think the glass rod filter is not suited to fine grinds. Perhaps I will get it out and do some test brews. Cona is still available I think but very expensive new.
Hopefully in 2009 I will import a few new models of syphon for the growing community of syphon lovers. I also plan to bring in some different types of burner- including small gas burners suitable for a small syphon bar.

The butane burner isnt totally necessary for a start so maybe se if they are going to get regular use first, using the alcohol burners and moving them to the side as the water rises works fairly well.
