Re: Which Syphon Brand/Where to buy?

    Hello all,
thanks for the various positive reviews folks.

as to the question about the glass used in the Bellina syphons:

I am not exactly sure if the glass is identical to Hario glass. I dont have a Hario to compare it with. If someone can post an image of a Hario top globe I could compare them (especially the seal). I do know that in the past Bellman produced some components for Hario under license. The TCA Bellina does seem to be identical to the Hario counterpart- and the glass is of very good quality: quite thick for this type of syphon. I wouldnt say it is a re-badged Hario as such- as it is certainly made in Taiwan not Japan. I use the wet cloth method to accelerate the draw back and I have not had any cracked glass to date. Bellman products are well made in my experience.

Personally I prefer the TCA style- though the SCA brews just as well- and the storage of the top dome on the stand is more secure. I dont know why I prefer the TCA- perhaps I like the lines more- it also takes up less counter space.

from what I have read one of the finest syphon brands of all is the European made Cona brand. They have very fine glass- and a glass filter rod. Some say this is the best coffee maker available bar-none- as the coffee only comes into contact with glass and water- nothing else. I have a very large Cona- I have not tried it out much as it is so big (7 cups?)- I think the glass rod filter is not suited to fine grinds. Perhaps I will get it out and do some test brews. Cona is still available I think but very expensive new.

Hopefully in 2009 I will import a few new models of syphon for the growing community of syphon lovers. I also plan to bring in some different types of burner- including small gas burners suitable for a small syphon bar.

The Moon Leaf Gift Shop in Perth sell Hario products but dont have an online store so it would be down to telephoning them.
You can email them, I did so recently and received a reply as to what was in stock and a request for my postcode for freight cost, I didnt go ahead with it though, bought a Cona off eekbay but I wont go into that.

Thanks for that info Jack, much appreciated mate [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Knew there was some kind of link between Hario and Bellman products, just wasnt clear what the setup was. Would be interesting if you were able to get a genuine Hario to sit side by side with a Bellman. For me though, it doesnt really matter one way or the other, I am very, very happy with my little TC3A ‘Gold’ and the very flavoursome brews it is able to produce.

        Cheers mate,
        Mal.

          Thanks Mal,

I actually looked up some images of the Hario- and to be honest the two machines look identical. The seal, and the base of the top globe have an identical form and I feel confident that the Bellina globes would fit perfectly on a Hario stand. I doubt there would be any real difference in the glass or components.

However I am not so sure about our SCA model- that appears to be a bit different to the corresponding Harion version.

            Hi Jack,

Thanks for checking on them, very much appreciated.

Do you have, or will you at some time in the near future have the larger filter packs available?

Any ideas on when you might have the replacement/extra spring/filter holders?

Do you know if you will be getting any of the larger 5 or 10 cup siphons at all?

            cheers,
            James

              hmm,

I am not sure if we will stock larger packets of filters- but if you wanted to order an absolute heap: I can give some discount...

I am trying to get the spare spring/filter sets right now. should have them in soon.

I am not sure about the large capacity Syphons- I used to sell a larger 5 cup version of the SCA. I found that not many people wanted a large one. Does anybody else think they would be interested in large syphons?

I have seem a fantastic Hario Min syphon. Absolutely tiny- makes only one small cup.

Re: Which Syphon Brand/Where to buy?

I dont think a 10 cup syphon would get a lot of use (therefore sales) but I imagine people might want a 5 cup syphon for making coffee for more than 1 or 2 people at a time.

The reason Im considering a 5 cup as well as a smaller unit is for that purpose - so I can offer syphon coffee to a number of friends when they come over. That said, I could easily do multiple batches of a 3 cup syphon or just offer shot glass amounts

A super mini single cup would be very interesting to see.

                cheers,
                James

Re: Which Syphon Brand/Where to buy?

                  Hi Jack,

if you were considering bringing in a larger Syphon an 8 cup works well for me for 4 or 5 people for larger mug servings. As the owner of a single boiler espresso machine I tend to make Syphon brews for groups as it is faster than waiting for steam back to brew again. Pitched as an upmarket Dinner party coffee maker I think it has potential. The Balance brewer is a great talking point as well

Limited market at this stage but if you can find an electric powered version for a reasonable price (similar to the old US Silex or Sunbeam or the modern Bodum) then there is a definate market.

Cloth filters seem to let through the most flavour whilst keeping out all of the sediment. The problem with cloth filters is that they are a PITA to clean and keep clean.
Hope you learnt some cleaning techniques for the filter yesterday

Time to put my sink hose with spray setting to good use.

Im shocked to see Luca writing that, given his penchant for Cafetto.... Ive found the number one way to clean these babies is to soak in Cafetto overnight and then give em a good seeing to with the cold water tap (or one of Daves handy sink-hoses). They come up as clean and white as new, even whiter than new ones.... 8-)

Ive found the new Cafetto EVO the BEST stuff to clean these suckers. Better than the normal stuff. Its also a piece of mind to know that youre not pounding back some harsh detergent either in your coffee.

Oh yeah; for sure - I use cafetto by the bucketful on most coffee things that I own, including syphon filters. Its just that it does lengthen the process. Mieko heats the filters for several minutes in the top of a syphon at the end of each day in her syphon bar. I bought an extra filter with spring from Toshi so that I can keep them swapping around. Might even buy another one. Im sure that Ill have a jug of cafetto and hot water getting a workout on a regular basis now that nim gave me a neru drip as well.

                          Cheers,

                          Luca

I recently bought my first 2 syphon brewers, a Hario NCA 3 & an NCA 5. While the NCA 3 is still available over here from one supplier the NCA 5 was a rare fine. As far as I can tell it may have been the last NIB unit in No. America.

Heya, been reading this forum a bit. Going to get my brothers a syphon for Christmas, they are 15/16, I wanted to get something they like (coffee) combined with something cool, and the process of these looks really fun.

So ive been looking at Sorrentina, and they are really nice.

But then I saw that stovetop ones from amazon were alot cheaper. So my question is, what are the major differences between using a stovetop brand i.e. bodum or northwest, and a butane burner brand?

Keep in mind my brothers arent going to be after the perfect cup, just something good that can start the learning.

Re: Which Syphon Brand/Where to buy?

Problem with the stovetop ones is you need a stovetop and they dont like small quantities as much. With my couple the brew they make tends to toward over extracted as the drawdown time can be slower than ideal.

Best compromise on size is probably the 3 cup one as it will make 2 reasonable sized cup or a large mug. Also you can buy spare glass bits if needed The butane burner isnt totally necessary for a start so maybe se if they are going to get regular use first, using the alcohol burners and moving them to the side as the water rises works fairly well.

As to cheaper Syphons a few of them I own the overall fit isnt as good and the tube length is a little long leading to it being a bit harder to get a consistent brew.

For teenage (or big kid) appeal the chemistry set look of the burner ones is hard to beat too
