    Hario TCA-3

Hario TCA-3 3 cup Glass Coffee Syphon
    Manufacturer Hario Glass Japan http://www.harioglass.com/

Price Range circa $150-200 AUD ** Current supply in Australia limited but was available from Swanhouse in WA

Considered by some to be one of the best glass Syphons currently in production the glass is certainly clear and even in apperance. Rubber seal appears to be Silicon and it where fits into the lower chamber is thickened glass. Standard of fit of the components is excellent including the stand. Supplied with an alcohol burner as standard but the Butane one from Sorrentina coffee fits under perfectly. Unit comes shipped with a cloth filter and plastic measure/stirring spoon.

    Physical info:
Weight of Upper Chamber & Rubber Seal 182g
    Brew Capacity 360ml nominal
    Weight of lower Chamber 108g

      Unibuy TCA-3

Unibuy TCA-3 3 cup Glass Coffee Syphon
      Manufacturer Unibuy China

Price Range circa $80-130 AUD only source in Australia known is Evilbay at this time

Cheap Clone Hario copy. Glass looks good and very like the Hario but clearly lighter weight in places particularly the upper brew chamber. Rubber seal appears to be Silicon and it where fits into the lower chamber is thickened glass. Standard of fit of the components is good, the stand is not as secure as the Hario but it does have rubberised feet (unlike the Hario). Supplied with an alcohol burner as standard but the Butane one from Sorrentina coffee fits under perfectly. Unit comes shipped with a cloth filter and plastic measure/stirring spoon and a Bamboo Stirrer. Overall looks like a cheap tacky copy (mainly the stand) but the price is good.

      Physical info:
Weight of Upper Chamber & Rubber Seal 164g
      Brew Capacity 360ml nominal
      Weight of lower Chamber 116g

This Syphon is different to most of the currently manufactuered ones in that it is Hand Blown Glass and not machine made. The glass brew chamber heavier all round than any other glass Syphons I have seen and the Temperature Stability is Excellent during use. Rubber seal is Natural Rubber. Standard of fit of the components is excellent including the stand. Supplied with an alcohol burner as standard but the Butane one from Sorrentina coffee fits under the lower chamber at a sqeeze. Unit comes shipped with a cloth filter holder and plastic measure/stirring spoon.

        Physical info:

            Bodum Santos

            Syphon Name: Bodum Santos

Price Range: $130ish in the "gift box"

            Features:
*Capacity of approximately one litre (or about 8 cups, in japanese syphon brewer speak)
            *Plastic notched filter
            *Curved top section
            *Flat bottom

            *"Gift box" contains:
            **Curved cleaning brush
            **Measuring spoon
            **Stirring spoon
**Alcohol burner and metal stand (for heating)
            **Stand for upper section
**Stand for lower section (for serving)
            **Lid for upper section
            **Lid for lower section

            Notes/Comments:
*Impractical for use to serve one or two people, but great if you have a whole bunch of people over for dinner.
*The alcohol burner takes a long time to heat up the amount of water used in this syphon, even if it is added to the lower section right off the boil. The heating stand will accommodate the butane burners that are starting to become popular for syphons and these are, IMHO, well and truly worthwhile getting.
*Plastic filter is easy to clean, but prone to clog. If the filter clogs, the syphon may be at risk of shattering under the vacuum. (The santos will take a cloth filter from a Hario TCA-2, which does not have these problems.)
*Scrubbing brush does the job very well.
*Flat bottom means that you can use this syphon on the stove. Be careful, as if the bottom section boils dry, the glass may crack. It might be a good idea to use a spacer or diffuser ring and be sure to keep a close eye on it.

Re: Information/Reviews of Syphon brewers- NO DISCUSSIONS

              Name: Cory DKG-S
              Price: $35-$45 USD
              Features:
              • Glass rod filter
              • Flat bottom for stovetop use
              • 8-cup capacity

              Notes:
There are loads of these on eBay, apparently in the 1950s everyone in the US bought one and then stashed it in the attic.  Their biggest appeals are their vintage look and the glass filter rod.  I like the rod for its no-waste quality but it really is finicky about clogging on the way down.  Ive only had consistent trips south when I dont whirlpool.  Another large downside to these old pots is that their rubber gaskets tend to be dried up and wont seal well, but they can be reconditioned: http://www.aboutcoffee.net/2008/03/r...t-gaskets.html.  The final downside Ill mention is that the dip tube leaves too much water in the carafe leading to a diluted cup.  I solved this problem by extending the tube with a piece of vinyl tubing so that only about 1/8" is left behind.

Overall I do like this vacuum pot because it brews a very good cup of coffee with less sediment than a press pot.

                  Duralux "Deluxe"

Duralux 8 cup Aluminium Coffee Syphon
                  Manufacturer Buckeye Aluminum Co.

Price Range Circa $50+ second hand only

Just the thing to add to the Camping Kit. Teamed with a Hand Grinder and there is no excuse for bad coffee anywhere Seal is Natural Rubber. Unit comes fitted with a Stainless Steel filter (which can clog and slow drawdown times) as shown so dont grind to fine. I have also tried a glass rod but without much better results. Adapting a cloth filter shouldnt be to difficult.

The only reason it is the "Deluxe" model is it has Red Handles not Black :

                  Physical info:
Brew Capacity 8 cup Nominal but does 4 cups well

                    Imiki TCA-2 (Hario clone)

Imiki TCA-2 2 cup Glass Coffee Syphon
                    Manufacturer Imiki Japan ??

Price Range circa Unknown but mine was $0.99 + postage 8-)

Good quality Hario clone. Rubber seal appears to be Silicon and it where fits into the lower chamber is thickened glass. Standard of fit of the components is excellent including the stand. ** Glass is thicker than my TCA-3 Hario. Supplied with an alcohol burner as standard but the Butane one from Sorrentina coffee fits under perfectly. Unit comes shipped with a cloth filter and plastic measure/stirring spoon.

                    Physical info:
Weight of Upper Chamber & Rubber Seal 160g
                    Brew Capacity 240ml nominal
                    Weight of lower Chamber 100g

No real company information availabile but the instructions refer to it as a "Hario coffee syphon". Just for fun a quote from the instructions "Wash Grass bowls in water without using soap...."  ;D

                      Hario NCA-5

Hario NCA-5 5 cup Glass Coffee Syphon (also available as a 3 Cup)
                      Manufacturer Hario Glass Japan http://www.harioglass.com/

Price Range circa was $200 AUD but no longer available so second hand only.

Considered by some to be one of the best glass Syphons currently in production the glass is certainly clear and even in apperance. Fited with a Rubber seal & where fits into the lower chamber is thickened glass. Standard of fit of the components is excellent including the stand. Supplied with an alcohol burner as standard but it is a wickless one the Butane one from Sorrentina coffee is to tall due to the height. Unit comes shipped with a filter that takes paper filter inserts (common in Japan) but the cloth ones from Hario, Bellina or Yama fit well.

                      Physical info:
                      Brew Capacity 600ml nominal

Vintage British Made CONA Cory No. 11 a De Luxe

This is a superb vintage syphon made in the UK with cork seals and bakelite lid. The body of the stand is made of wood.

Glass quality is superb- very thin neck and tube on the parts make cleaning a little harder. Glass is thick.

Probably had a glass rod filter originally- this one has been fitted with a metal spring/cloth type set up.

Large capacity - ran a test brew and the result was superb. Used a cold cloth to accelerate draw back- no exploding dome-

Build quality is superb- the neck clamp is the nicest I have seen on any syphon. The cork seal looks its age (50+years?) but still seals perfectly in testing. The feet on this one was badly damages so I replaced with a modern part of the same specs. It is chromed ally (just like the original) and looks a perfect match.

and looks? well, a thing of great beauty no doubt:

While we are on a Cona theme.

Cona Model A 2-3 cup Glass Coffee Syphon (no longer in production) Also available in model B, C and D (1.5 litres)
Manufacturer Cona either England or Germany

Price Range All models including second hand $100+ to $250+ for model D new.

Glass quality is outstanding as is the overall component fit and function. Seal is in natural rubber. These units are designed to be used with a Glass drainer but the Hario types can be used. Supplied with a beautifully made alcohol burner as standard the Butane one from Sorrentina coffee is to tall to fit.

                          Physical info:
                          Brew Capacity 300ml nominal

Now looking for the Cona Rex model to go with these 2. Syphon in the background is a Hario 3 cup for size reference.

Syphon Name: Royal Balancing Coffee Syphon
                            Price Range: Paid $40NZD
                            Features:
Notes/Comments: Fun to watch and definately gets the comments when you place on the dinner table after a meal. Im pretty new to the whole syphon thing and have not been using any sort of filter as other people Ive seen with this setup use. I simply grind a course press on my hario, pour the contents into a plastic container and tap it on the side to forse the finer grinds allowed through the hario (play at courser grinds) to the bottom. I then scoop only the top grinds into the syphon.

Im sure the above setups make a far better cup and this is more for display but I gave it a whirl for 40 bucks and it aint half bad.

Syphon Name: the CONA coffee machine kitchen model (unsure of the model... only says 'STANDARD MODEL')
                              Price Range: Paid $40
                              Features: glass rod filter
                              Notes/Comments:

I really dont like the stand it came with! a little flimsy and unstable wire

a little bit on the large side - picked it up at a garage sale not long ago. i think the glass rod increases the demand for the need of a good grinder - i found that my hario slim mill was not able to cope =( and clogged up on the draw down. another thing that was mentioned before on this thread was that the tube reaching into the lower chamber has a little too much clearance - coupled with a flat base it leaves a lot of water behind which i find makes a diluted cup (thinking of adding a tube or something... any suggestions? )

also, while waiting on a gas burner to get shipped (local cafe sold out) i found a pretty nifty site that shows how to make variable output alcohol stoves! had some fun making them on the weekend! =p
