    Re: Best brewing methods

Ooooh, thats a good idea! Id have never thought of that.

Im looking forward to getting a grinder (finally) but I can already see that its not going to be long after that before I want to roast my own beans. Its already annoying buying them all the time.

Yes definitely get a grinder, freshly ground, fresh beans make all the difference. not nearly as much as which process you use.
All processes make poor coffee if beans are not fresh, and if they are pre-ground.

You might also like to revisit your filter machine after you get your grinder,
I found that my cheapy filter machine worked quite well IF I ran the water through once then added the coffee and ran the water through again, since the water was already heated the first time, the second run would get it closer to optimum temperature, as it was definitely too cold the first time through.
(Alternative might be to pre-heat water in microwave or kettle, then run it through the filter machine, as long as you dont boil it first)
Oh and dont forget if using filter paper, to wet it first to reduce the paper taste)

Im liking the plunger best out of what I have at the moment but getting a grinder will give me a lot more scope and messing around ability. Definitely looking forward to it!

The Aeropress was my fav for quite sometime. Then came Syphon and then pour over. Love them all as they all are quite different in the cup. Had a pretty decent go at plunger following several very experienced peoples advice and also my own mucking around but just dont like plunger, but thats just me.

Keep reading and playing thats the only way

Ill give steeping a go next try, thanks.

I saw the AeroPress but I was guided in the direction of the other methods over it. I wouldnt mind trying one cause it looks interesting but probably not till I get a grinder.

A little late, but for great coffee, reasonable price, and ease of use I recommend either a French press (which you already seem to have bought) or an AeroPress.  French press makes my favorite cup of coffee, but you cant beat the versatility of an AeroPress.

    New Bean,

Try steeping it in the plunger first, then after about 40 seconds to a minute, pouring it into the swissgold filter. That way you dont need to rely on grind size to slow the drainage.

Hay! I figured at least one of you would have been on here. Nice to meet you

I used about 14g (roughly) of Estate to about 220-ish mL of water. I had the idea that Im basically trying to slow how quick the water passes through the coffee so I ended up fitting a Harris filter into the bottom. I still think the grind should be finer but it made a difference to the strength overall.

New bean I think I was there when you bought your items. I was the guy that told you I use my swiss gold over my chemex.

How much coffee did you use (what blend S/O) and how much water?

Woo! Paid a visit to Veneziano this arve and walked out with an 8-cup plunger, a Swiss Gold...thingy and a bag of pre-ground coffee (ground for the plunger).

I tried the Swiss Gold first and I dont think the grind I have is the best for it as it was very weak. I might give twice the coffee a go later but I think I need a finer grind.

The plunger just works and the mesh is fine enough that very little coffee comes through. The result is heaps better than the auto-drip I was using.

Now I need to move the grinder up a few spots on the to buy list...

Lots of choices but its what YOU like in the end

I prefer Syphon to Pour over but I am far more practised up with them. Plunger can be fairly good too albeit it more muddied in flavours than the other two options.

If you cant get a Syphon locally then a chat to Sorrentina is in order and get the option with the Butane Burner.

KK go the cloth one from Jack it should fit. You will just need to make sure it sits straight in the upper chamber as there is no locator like in some of the others.

Alright, so it looks like theres a few things Ill be checking out on the weekend (plungers, pour-overs and syphons if Veneziano has them). Ive also just used the last of my pre-ground so the timing is good for switching to a new brewing device.

KK very similar to your picture but the cloth fits over a mesh gaurd also, then the cup is very very clean in terms of fines. Of course some like a little extra in the cup. I guess you have tried a courser grind with the glass rod already?
"New Bean" plunger might be a good suggestion if you want a bit more boogy in the brew or just add more coffee to the filter, as Acog said 6-7gms per 100ml for a starting point.
My paper filter pour overs are usually 16gms per 300mls.
    Have a play.

The syphon is good and the Cona makes a great cup
However I need to get a different style of filter to replace the glass rod as it lets in some coffee grounds

What is the most affective filter for a syphon brewing system
    Any suggestions

    Or something like this

    Syphon rocks.

New Bean, try to stick to around 60grams per litre. I also steep mine in a separate container then use the pour over as a way of filtering it. Steep for just under a minute and try it. I find this works very well and always leaves the brew nicely balanced.
