    Just out of possible interest...
I work at an espresso bar in perth and we (last night) had our uber boiler installed. I thought this maybe of some interest to people.

The uber boiler enables us to make filter coffee achievable in a commercial setting. We will be using a clever dripper to brew the coffee in.

The aspect of the machine that amazed me today, as I played, was how stable the water temp is coming out of the spout. This machine will begin to be common place in coffee bars as people begin to realise the importance on filter coffee. I will post more as we nut this new toy out...

Have read about the uber on james hoffmanns blog and for pourovers etc it sounds like the ducks guts. Any idea what the prices are landed in Aus?

          Interesting blog/review here http://onocoffee.blogspot.com/2010/06/lost-in-time-marco-uber-boiler.html

US$5800 = Aust$ 6500 approx and this guy seems far from impressed.  :-/

            Re: Uber

From memory, the Uber boiler was originally going to come in at a grand or two. Its a lovely, but for the price, I think you have to seriously question the value. The dudes at Supreme have knocked up some pretty wicked PIDded urns. A few hundred bucks for an urn and the PID gadgetry leaves a heckuva lot of money left over to buy a scale and gives you the flexibility to buy an urn big enough to handle even a pretty massive cupping. The mahlkoenig/ditting uber grinder, on the other hand, strikes me as a much better value proposition.

            Cheers,
            Luca

Great looking bit of gear but you can get a good result for a lot less even if it doesnt look as cool. At 1/2 the price it would work financially roll on the cheap Chinese knockoffs or break out the urn

                Re: Uber

Thought these observations were interesting. :-?

But to my mind, the real killer of the Uber Boiler is the recovery time. As a test, I dispensed a liter of water from the Uber Boiler (roughly 20 percent of the Ubers capacity) into a Chemex and then hit the Prime button just to see how long it would take to refill the boiler and recover temperature.

Bear in mind that the Uber for this example was refilling via an external pump fitted to a 5 gallon jug of bottled water at room temperature (roughly 70-75F).

The refill time took Three Minutes and Thirty-Five seconds. An eternity in the world of brew-by-the-cup bar operations.

Three minutes, thirty-five seconds. I could have another cup completing brewing in that time.

Some of you may think that pulling one liter of water out of the Uber is an unfair test. With one liter of water, I can brew nearly THREE 12 ounce coffees. Three coffees is not an unheard of amount at a time when youre brewing by-the-cup.

Sixteen seconds to equalize Font temperature.

Remember, the Uber in Prime mode will do nothing except refill and reheat. This six thousand dollar boiler is dead in the water for over three and half minutes. Holy Crap, we would totally be screwed during the rush.

Add on the sixteen seconds it takes to equalize the Font to the boiler and youre talking Three Minutes and Fifty-One seconds - nearly four minutes to recover after expending only twenty percent of the Ubers capacity. Is this really acceptable???

Some of the other baristas remarked that you can get around this by adding additional Uber Boilers. Really? Im already spending six times the amount of a Fetco water tower for one Uber and in order for me to handle the rush, I need to purchase an exponentially growing number of Uber Boilers??? Thats insanity.

In order to handle Spro Hampdens current volume, we would need two or three Uber Boilers. Thats upwards of Eighteen Thousand Dollars investment and we wouldnt have the counter space to accommodate that many Uber Boilers. I cant imagine how many Uber Boilers you would need to handle the volume of places like Intelligentsia Silver Lake - even though those cats could afford twenty Uber Boilers.

I have seen the "worlds most expensive kettle" overseas for the last couple of years... and it always has a pile of fanbois flapping their arms around it at the trade shows (including curiously someone in this thread) but for AU$6000+ you could build something far more interesting.

Still, kudos to Uber for the Uber-Cool name and what appears to be good sales.

There is a "Curtis Hot water system".
20L 5000W. A site in US sells them at US$830.
Dont know if it is a PID or a thermostat and would require over 20amp. Still a lot cheaper.

nice bassway. Ive got 4 of those Curtis HW Dispensers on a plane on the way over at the moment. Mainly for our cupping room.
Funny thing though is that its going next to our Uber Boiler(which we didnt pay nearly as much as it goes for now).... which our Uber Grinder will be sitting next to when it arrives Toys.
