Re: Silex vacuum coffee brewer spare parts
Hi Jim
I have not found a source yet but I am sure something will pop up one day. I have left it in its original condition and do not use it at this stage. I use a current model Hario for Syphon coffees. I would like to do a full restoration if the appropriate replacement part could be sourced

Re: Silex vacuum coffee brewer spare parts
Ahoy! Beanz, did you ever solve your gasket problem? Ever find a source for new wide-mouth gaskets? Ive been searching on and off for a couple of years with no luck. My gasket isnt hardened--its nice and supple--but it doesnt make a good seal on the bottom globe. Ive tried all kinds of things to fix it--silicone, rubber cement, vinyl putty, nasty rubber patching goo-- but nothing works (fortunately it all comes back off, as well!), and I want to replace it, if I can find a good replacement. Ill check out the suggestions made in this thread, but what I really want is a NOS gasket or a good silicone copy. Any ideas?
Thanks for any help.

Re: Silex vacuum coffee brewer spare parts
I cut a new "gasket" from an old inner tube in an attempt to improve the "airtightness" or seal on my wide neck Silex, it worked well.
Way back at the end of June Flynn Aus found a product with unlimited uses, perhaps it could solve your problem.
Goggle search Sugru & watch the amazing video clip!Originally posted by 2E24312626293D3B480 link=1277785626/0#0 date=Mouldable silicon putty

Re: Silex vacuum coffee brewer spare parts
From the above site Xylene looks very nasty.
In the dairy industry caustic soda (Sodium Hydroxide) is used at a 5% solution for cleaning the rubber on milking machines. The rubber can be soaked in it. Natural rubber is highly resistant to the caustic so is used for lining vessels in contact with caustic solutions.
It is extremely alkaline and must be used with care not to get it on skin or in eyes.
Dairy chemicals are available from farmer suppliers or friendly dairy farmers.
Less toxic is soda ash and washing soda (Sodium Carbonate). Soda ash is 3 to 4 times as concentrated as washing soda and is available from swimming pool suppliers or friendly swimming pool managers.

Re: Silex vacuum coffee brewer spare parts
We used to use a product called "Xylol" (Xylene) for this purpose but I dont know if it is still available over the counter anywhere. Its very nasty stuff, as you pointed out....Originally posted by 2B2C28272F253020272E490 link=1284705004/3#3 date=1284799266I was also trying to find a thread on a US site about refurbishing the seals by soaking them in a petroleum based solution (not sure which one). While a bit nasty the theory is that it softened the rubber again.
MSDS here... http://www.jtbaker.com/msds/englishhtml/x2000.htm

Re: Silex vacuum coffee brewer spare parts
I will go searching again. Part of the problem on the Silex I have is that the rubber is so hard removing it will destroy the seal completely. I am not sure how easy it will come away from the glass. I am not prepared to try untilI have a replacement seal.

The other option you have is to try and buy a section of soft rubber extrusion that is close and glue one up. Look up "Tulip seals and packings" or "Mackay Rubber" for a start maybe. If you do any good with a section and want to split some drop me a PM as my Silex is a bit harder than ideal.

Re: Silex vacuum coffee brewer spare parts
Thanks for the feedback. I have seen narrow neck ones on US based web pages but not the wide neck versions.

Re: Silex vacuum coffee brewer spare parts
I am fairly sure there is a US company making them as an after market part. Bad news
Narrow neck ones available but not the wide neck.
Wide-neck Replacement Rubber Gaskets
Food Service Direct once sold replacement gaskets for a stainless steel vacuum pot in the style of the vintage Cory/Nicro pot. I have received reports that these gaskets work well on some older, wide-neck pots.
Note: Food Service Direct no longer sells the replacement gasket for the Adcraft vacuum coffee pot (AdCraft has apprently discontinued this item), but they still have some of the replacement filter assemblies in stock. Get em while they last!

Silex vacuum coffee brewer spare parts
Does anyone know if replacement seals are available for the Silex Vacuum coffee brewers ? There was a narrow neck version and a wide neck version. I am looking for a wide neck seal. Any leads on where to source? Possibly early 1950s or earlier. Similar to photos attached
