Re: New to forum + stovetop questions
If you buy a little hand grinder Kyocera or Hario then it will improve your coffee at work as TG mentioned. Either of these two will produce a better grind than the EM480 as well

Re: New to forum + stovetop questions
Ground coffee is best used within 3 minutes of grinding; the longer you leave it the more you notice it going stale.Originally posted by 424945404E5E43422C0 link=1292461129/2#2 date=1292537732would it be better to have a small hand grinder at work to grind my beans rather than grind them in batches at home?
You decide.

Re: New to forum + stovetop questions
Thanks Brett,
That seems awfully obvious now that youve explained it!
A question I forgot to ask initially - would it be better to have a small hand grinder at work to grind my beans rather than grind them in batches at home? ie. Are the small hand grinders worthwhile?
Thanks,
neil.

Re: New to forum + stovetop questions
My best results have been with slightly coarser grinds than espresso, my best suggestions is to keep everything else the same and make a few coffees with different grinds. That way you know what works for your beans (note this may change when you change to a different bean, frustrating I know but that is why coffee is so great there is no magic formula)

New to forum + stovetop questions
Hi everyone,
Im new to the forum, so "Hi" from me. It looks like this is a really helpful and lively forum - there is certainly a good friendly vibe here.
I have a Silvia at home and a Sunbeam EM0480 burr grinder (I know - there are better out there) and make mostly lattes. Living out of town its not easy for us to have fresh beans on hand but we try to get new beans every month. Were pretty happy with the Silvia. My daughter works part time at a cafe and can make a pretty decent cup, and she has pronounced the Silvia OK. Still looking longingly at a laScala Butterfly though!
At work I use an aluminium 2 cup stovetop on an old electric stove, and having read the brewmethods guide and a few of the posts here I seem to be doing most things right. However Im not sure of the grind I should be using. For the Silvia I use a grind setting of 4 on the Sunbeam, but Ive been using a coarser grind than that for the stovetop, although Im not sure that is the best way to go.
What do you guys suggest?
thanks,
neil.Tags: None
