So...according to the law as quoted, the police should have gone away when they saw the legitimate reason--there is nothing there to require a signed authority!

Of course who knows what is in the regulations!

And a legal fight over a bit of glassware is probably not warranted.

(Does this mean that all the mechanical stirrers in our coffee roasters/bread machines are also subject to this?)

"Legitimate reason" isn't clearly defined and is basically up to a judge to assess.

In this case I believe it would have been an easy defence and personally I would stand on principle but most people can't justify the disruption.

"Stirrer" has a pretty specific meaning in this context.

Damn this is pretty full on. Surely they can just get you on the drugs/residue which is bound to be lying around, not the equipment. You shouldn't have to justify having a bloody air freshner in your house. What if you're into molecular gastronomy and want to rotory evaporate your food, like Heston Blumenthal?

Does not get much simpler than this.
            300ml water
40g medium grind, Rwanda Ruhuha, this was rich and smooth choc with very low acidity as espresso this morning, so im thinking it will be ultra smooth through the dripper.
            about 42 drips / min
2 X paper filter on top
            S filter below
Made a couple of simple mods to up my volume.

Looking for 500ml final volume from 90g coffee.

Pre wet all the grounds, placed a couple of spoonfuls in and then gave it a tap to settle - repeat.
Aiming for 8 to 10 hours extraction, going to do this on days where I am around house so I can keep water level topped up for consistent drip rate.

About half way through now and it smells divine...

I just had 4 police officers jump my fence and short of holding me at gun point pretty much forced their way into the house. Apparantly separatory funnels are illegal unless you sign some sort of paperwork that validates its use.

              That buggers my idea then.
They're not called fun stoppers for no reason then.

But I've definitely got a new project amongst the other dozen or so

I did this a couple of years ago.
                Similar setup to Steve.
600ml water bottle with same dripper as James in the lid.
Someone suggested I use the cutdown papers after my first batch or two.
The main reason I went this way was to keep the size down as opposed to a tower setup.
It all sits nicely in the spare fridge as it drips.
But now that Andy advises room temperature will suffice, that is no longer a factor.

Which state? This is getting concerning...

Did they show a warrant or just scare you into compliance?

*EDIT* Also interested to know how/where you purchased.

I wouldn't purchase anything "grey" from eBay as I suspect that the co-operate heavily with Police when it comes to regulated items (whether or not they're prohibited).

A few years back I bought something I shouldn't have through eBay and had it for a good twelve months before I got the call from ACBPS; "We think you might be able to help us with our inquiries into some xyz that have been brought into the country."

If they'd noticed the package it would have been intercepted as soon as I'd received it, so the only way they could have picked it up is if eBay/sellers are supplying buyer lists to ACBPS/XYZPOL.

Here is my cold drip tower made from soda bottle (free) irrigation dripper tap ($0.50) v60 like pour over filter holder (free) glass tea pot ($3.00) curtain rod (free) and a biscuit tin(free).
It seams to do a very good job of brewing coffee and at $246.50 cheaper than a yama I am very happy about that

I've been cold dripping by freezing ground coffee in h20 solution overnight. I freeze it in a plastic bag which has been placed in my large (6 cup) plastic cone filter. I take it out of the plastic bag in the morning and put filter paper in the cone drop the frozon blockof coffee in and just let it thaw through. About four or five hours at 25 degrees will see it through to its best.

I have this ceramic water filter (below) that has hung around for years and I'm looking into using it for cold drip (no ice). Possibly use the irrigation dripper or perhaps invert a gold filter cone over the hole in the top chamer, load with about 2 kilo of coffee to 5 litre of water and then see how I go at the local market with it. Actually, I think I'd use ice in it.

There are some really cool designs on here. I think I've been inspired.

If you live in SA (unless you want some excitement at tax payers expense) suggest you stay away from the separatory funnel design.

Awesome JamesM. Looking forward to trying something like this when I find time before next summer.

I have just read the NSW legislation and separatory funnels aren't listed as controlled apparatus so should be fine in NSW.

Saoye, with your Buchner funnel which size filter did yours come with? I am thinking of getting the coarse #4 which is 5-15 micron. Seems close to what filter paper is but don't want to risk it getting stuck. #3 15-40 micron seems like it would let through fines. Also did u use filter paper over the built in one?

Thinking about doing this using 1l funnel + 350ml buchner + 1l Flat bottom flask. Should be able to brew around 700-800ml i guess at a time. And I love the mad scientist look of it!
