  • How to I use an aeropress

    Hey guys, been into coffee for quite awhile already but haven't actually made one with an aeropress before!

    Anything that i should look out for while making one? eg. water temperature, how long to soak grind, grind size etc.

    Hey mate

    For me the aeropress is free for experimentation.
    I could give u a recipe but where's the fun in that haha
    Suggestions though, definitely go the inverted method with a filter grind.
    If u want some inspiration I'd check out the aeropress world championship recipes. They upload the top 5 to their website each year. When I'm feeling a bit bored with my current recipe I normally go there to see how the champs do it!

        Hi Sohshuai,

        Agree the aeropress is a great device for experimentation but also good to have a base recipe to go back to.

        1. Definitely prefer inverted method with paper filter rather that stainless disc.
        2. Preheat aeropress with hot water and use this to rinse filter
        3. I generally will use a filter roast coffee as I prefer higher acidity and more upfront varietal taste profile.
        4. I use 6gm coffee to 100gm water ratio. Therefore 12gm/200gm for aeropress (I weigh both coffee and water to help with consistency)
        5. I grind coffee to consistency of about castor (fine) sugar
        6. After preheating aeropress put in coffee and add water. 93 deg C is best. Measure temp if you can, if not, use water about 60 secs off boil
        7. After one minute (best to time for accuracy) mix to break up coffee crust which will have settled on top.
        8. Put on lid/filter, place on cup, and plunge slowly, over about 30-45 secs

        For me this method produces most consistent results. Good luck.

          Tip I picked up here is to tip the water from the kettle into a jug then into the aeropress and it seems to get the temp right with no fuss. It does over extract if the water is too hot.

            Yes I second Richard's suggestion - I tested that method with a rapid response thermometer (the Thermapen) and it works well. Another way is to just pour the boiling water straight into the inverted Aeropress (without the grinds), wait about 10 seconds or so, and then put the grinds in. I was surprised at how rapidly the boiling water cools actually. I actually like putting the grinds in after the water because that way the grinds don't seem to gather down the bottom around the edge as much - I wasn't having to sort of scrape the grinds out of the bottom sides as much. (I would stir immediately, and vigorously, for about 20 seconds, before plunging)
