  • Wacaco Nanopresso

After a fairly underwhelming experience with the newly acquired Aeropress on an overseas trip recently, I came across the Nanopresso, successor to the Minipresso which was discussed briefly earlier on this forum. For $59 USD I figured it worth a shot (sorry about the pun!) and have preordered one.

Has anyone else ordered a Nanopresso? Or by some chance had their hands on a pre production sample? Backup for the original Minipresso appears to have been good and total investment is not massive so I'm giving it a go. Perhaps one day I'll spring for a Rossa HC but for now the Nanopresso looks like the next step.

    Cheers,

    Matt.

What's with the constant reference to 18bar pressure in the advertising material? It's weird.

The photo where it talks about cleaning it showing the spring reminds me of the insides of the pressurised portafilter of my in laws via venezia. That and saying how pre-ground coffee works well made me wonder if the 18 bar is to do with that?

Hmm just did a search and it looks like the original Minipresso effectively has a pressurised portafilter...

          Yeah. Not for me thanks.

OK I've arranged for a refund. The mention of the pressurised portafilter was enough.

I think I can see a Rossa HC or similar in my future though...

I've used a Minipresso and I was really impressed. It's not quite true espresso, but it's probably the closest you'll get with something portable like this. The two main problems with it are that it's difficult to pre-heat sufficiently and it's a little difficult to squeeze at times. Anyone that tried to eke a bit more out of it with a finer grind or slightly higher dose ran the risk of unseating the valve as well. It was an easy enough fix if this happened and Wacaco were quite onto it in dealing with this issue, but still not ideal. It sounds like the improvements they've made when developing the Nanopresso will make for a great little unit. It's still only officially rated as an 8g filter basket, but I reckon you'll get 9-10g in there most of the time easy enough. And if the pump and group unit is a bit more robust to allow for a higher pressure extraction then it could be a good thing. I'd be keen to give the Nanopresso a go when it comes into full production. Pressurised portafilter? Well, sort of. There's a pressure activated valve in there, but I don't really see how that's a bad thing.

Hi everyone, I'm Hugo the designer of the Minipresso and the Nanopresso. I'm new here and I register specially to reply about your concerns. I would like to confirm that Minipresso and Nanopresso come in standard with pressurized portafilter. You need to understand that most users are not expert and wish to get a nice and good espresso every time, whatever the coffee ground they are using. But this function can easily be cancelled in both of our machines by removing the small black silicon part link to the spring. However users will then have to work harder on the grinding.

@MattyRay, you should have post this question about the
pressurized portafilter at the bottom of the blog post in the comment section. I will have been more than happy to answer you and avoid any disappointment.

                Best,
                Hugo

Thanks for the comments Hugo. Can you confirm if removing the pressurising pin from the minipresso will not void the warranty? I've seen several mentions of pump seals blowing from too much pressure, but these comments have all been fairly old. Have the newer minipresso units been improved? I really don't want to test the limits of my unit it with too many choker shots!

As an endorsement, I've just finished a 3 week 4WD trip through the remote Kimberly area. The minipresso was paired with a Rhiniwares compact grinder and used every morning for 2 milk drinks. My wife and I couldn't have done without it. We had a mocca pot as backup and never used it.
It would be nice to be able to buy individual spare baskets. I would rather keep the small reservoir and use boiling water for each shot instead of the large reservoir getting cooler as you go, plus fresh ground beans on the spot negate the desire for preloading the 3 spare baskets in the reservoir kit that will just go stale.

                    Thanks Hugo.

i must admit I was a little disappointed to hear that the Nanopresso had a pressurised portafilter, but I had no idea it could be bypassed. Nice to hear it can be used unpressurised though, most of us here don't mind working on the grind as it's an integral part of what we normally do.

I haven't yet purchased another portable device, so will perhaps take this one out of the "no" basket and reconsider.

                    Thanks for the update.

                    Regards,

                    Matt.

Yes you are right, I did not think of the warranty problem for the Minipresso. Also, I will not suggest to remove the the pressurizing device from the Minipresso. As I said, without it, you need to work on the grind so it means using fine grind. But this will increase the inner pressure and the Minipresso has not been designed to work at 14-16 bar.

On the Nanopresso, everything has been developed to handle the high pressure. The portafilter can be very easily open for cleaning or to cancel the pressurizing device without causing any problem for the warranty. I have already run few test without it on single and double espresso. For sure the result is incomparable. The crema is very smooth. I will try to talk about this in the bog post and show an example.

                        Hugo

Have to say I love my Nanopresso - the taste is much better than the Minipresso. I pretty much take this to work and use it all day with my Rhino hand grinder - works a treat!

Hi Hugo. Can you please tell me if the kit+ with the 3 minipresso filter baskets will fit the nanopresso? This would be great for traveling as would the larger water tank. Also, when will the Barista kit and NS adaptor be available in Australia?
