  • Any delter press experiences?

At work I use a aeropress and porlex (waiting for a precision grinder to arrive).
The aeropress was gifted to me by a member here and is probably due to be passed along to someone new.
I am considering a delter press, or replacing my aeropress, but am interested to hear opinions of the delter compared to the aeropress.

Also, what is the diameter of the back of the plunger? From what I understand, the porlex will not fit inside it (precision is same diameter as porlex)
My other thought is that there is no way to bloom the grinds in the delter, does it thoroughly wet out all the grinds evenly?

    Help me decide.
    Cheers

I went to Di Bartoli for a quick demo on the delter.

I think to replace my aeropress at work with this as well.

Based on what I've see, there's a pre infusion that takes place and a bit of swirling will do the job.

As far as grinder fitting it, I don't know. I use electric grinder myself.

Where are you buying the delter from?

Probably alternative brewing. Not sure any Perth sponsors stock it. Maybe I should ring around.. but really it's hardly worth the purchase price to drive the other side of town to look at one.

I did actually write to delter and ask them what the plunger internal diameter is and if it is big enough to fit a porlex. Also asked if it didn't fit, were they planning to make it bigger in future to allow a grinder to fit in there.
My work is a pita, as we are on many different sites, and often delivered to site on a contractor bus, everything I need for the day- lunch, coffee stuff, hardhat, locks, water bottle, gloves, etc. All travel to work and back each day in a shoulder tool bag. Space and weight is quite a premium.

Porlex won't fit- nor will narrower Precision grinder for that matter. Stainless steel filter disks for Aeropress work perfectly.

I tried one on Kickstarter and, while it's ok, I will stick to the Aeropress because of its simplicity and especially ease of cleaning. If portability is an issue the ability to store a grinder in the Aeropress piston also puts it ahead of the Delter. The Delter is well made, and the dispersion screen seems to be very effective, but the relative complexity in the brew process put me off.

replaced my aeropress with a delter

              - definitely does not fit a porlex in the chamber like the aeropress
              - same diameter for filters so using my existing metal filter from the aeropress
              - can be a little more work cleaning up compared to aeropress (can't push out the spent grinds like the aeropress easily)
              - i let the grounds bloom by pulling the piston up to 50ml approx and letting the water hit the grounds and it does a good job of saturating the grounds as you see some drips within 30 secs depending on your grind size
              - got mine delivered from alternative brewing as well

So I have had the Delter for about 2.5 weeks and all was going fine, but now it seems like I cant get any pressure in the chamber all of a sudden. When I pull the plunger up there is now no effort required to push the water through and the plunger basically just falls back down. If I pull it back up it sucks water through the beans and the water in the chamber ends up with coffee in it.

It almost is like the chamber is too large for the plunger now.

Has anyone had these issues before with the Delter?

                  Hi Fergie,

Send an email to hello@deltercoffee.com and they may be able to help you out.

Give the 'Y' seal a good clean and dry off with a cloth. Also the inside of the chamber as well with a good clean and dry off. The Y seal is the seal at the bottom of the plunger. We've found oils apparent on the seal or inside the chamber will stop the seal from building pressure under the plunger.

Awesome, thanks for that. I'll give it a good clean tonight. Does the Y Seal just pull off? Is it fine to wash the whole unit in soapy water? I have just been rinsing with hot water after each use (seems gross of me lol)

Yes the Y seal comes off - try not to stretch it though. Notice its positioning in the seal groove. Concave faces downwards.
You can clean with soap, just be 100% sure that there is no residue, otherwise you still have a problem. The seal has an outer and an inner lip and you want to make sure the whole thing is clean and dry.

                      Hope this helps!!

I've started having an issue where the plunger won't pull up once I've added water. And then also when I go to push down, the water leaks above the seal (you can see it bubble up) so its not being pushed through. I've only had it for about a month but use it 1-2 times a day. Any advice on both these situations is appreciated!

Assuming the thing referred to above as a Y seal is what is more commonly called a U cup, the symptoms you describe are consistent with the seal being installed with the lip facing the wrong way.

I could recommend slightly twisting the plunger left or right whenever you engage it. The u-cup may be sticking and turning it a little helps in it's travel.

If you're seeing water leaking past the seal when you push.. I've found this happens with too much pressure applied to the plunger usually, or -too much back pressure generated through having a grind that is too fine.

~ possibly having too fine a grind could create both your issues but that's not saying the seal may not need to be cleaned or replaced. ~

thanks for that link! That was a good read.

Would you agree that the article suggests the u-cup would work better than if it were:
                              a) with the lips positioned facing directly outwards
                              b) an o-ring employed to assist in holding the u-cup in place /?
