  • Porlex hand grinder stuck in the Aeropress chamber.

    Hi Folks,

I seem to have managed to get the storage chamber part of the Porlex hand grinder stuck in the Aeropress chamber.
So far I have tried hot water hoping that one would expand, with no luck. Next step is freezer I guess.

Its been in there for some time as it doesn't get used unless we are away .... we are going away on Thursday and I need to take some coffee.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers

Maybe dribble a little vegetable oil around the stuck object where it contacts the chamber, then leave it sit for a while...

Remove rubber seal, drill hole through aeropress and push offender out. Replacing the seal will cover the hole

I used to use opposing thumbs. Make sure inside of Porlex catch can is clean and dry to enhance grip or alternatively use a little contact cement on catch can and thumbs. Applying a bit of hot water to outside of piston walls should also expand the piston a bit to assist. Good luck.

          Tried a few things:
          1. Olive oil down the side - it was possible to gently crush the side which opened up a little gap between the grinder and the Aeropress, good oil penetration - still not budging.
          2. Opposing thumbs - I must have big thumbs as I cant seem to get both into the Aeropress I have tried with one thumb - still not budging.
          3. Drilling and poking - This may be a last resort if needed. Certainly better than just smashing the chamber.
          4. Hot Water - I tried some hot water and then opposing thumbs (whilst still covered in olive oil) - still not budging
          5. Freezing - still in freezer.

          Cheers

Final update -no luck at all with freezer. Tried again with hot water, gently squeezing the chamber to try and get some water down the side. It seemed to be a mixture of olive oil and hot water and looked somewhat promising. Instead of the opposing thumbs I went the old three finger technique, just as I as about to give up I heard something, I gave it one more shot and then out it popped, in plenty of time of the trip away on Thursday.

Thanks all for the input. Hopefully I will not be repeating this any time soon.
