Re: SUNBEAM em6910 flow issues?
Try have your hopper half full at least! for sure! Ive discovered this makes a huge difference to the grind.
Dont worry if you feel like your grinder is set really low, mine is usually set around 7-10 depending on my beans (super fresh, 3 day old roast or so). all these grinders are different.
I grind into the basket, tap it on the bench, grind, tap, grind then sweep the mound of grind across the top of the basket back and forward to get an even and just slightly domed top. Im using the single shot basket most of the time.
Then I TAMP with a firm tamp, very little tap on the side then tamp. Then i blow the loose grinds away from the basket into my waste bucket, shove the handle in the machine and extract.
As already mentioned dont use that extraction gauge as the absolute rule of good brewing. Just watch your extraction... practice practice! Ive only been doing this for a couple of months myself, and Im still trying to get excellent extractions (happens sometimes).
Also read the thread on the EM0480 in the grinder section.

Re: SUNBEAM em6910 flow issues?
Hey,
I was at the Perth one too. With my wife as well. (got two machines, hence two places on the course.)
We get the beans from the place they recommended, their website is easy, and it always comes quickly.
I found the 6910s there to be a bit more "loose" than mine. Their obviously a bit older and get used a fair bit more too.

Oh dropped into a service agent and he said a similar thing and that the gauge should be at where its optimal doing that guage cal check.

Its handy until you get used to machine and then you dont need it.

Same here.
My home machine doesnt have one and makes a better coffee than the 6910 I use.

Re: SUNBEAM em6910 flow issues?
Forget about the brew gauge altogether, grind/tamp/timing and taste are far more important. My machine cost considerably more than the 6910 and it doesnt have the brew pressure guage and i am sure this wasnt just an oversight. It is just a distraction from getting the other variables correct. Mine does have a boiler pressure gauge, but that is fair enough when there is essentially a scalding water bomb under the bonnet.

Re: SUNBEAM em6910 flow issues?
good to hear that you are now pleased with your set up.
Once you get consistent with your shot (30 in 30 with the single or 60 in 30 with the double + or - a few ml / seconds) dont be frightened to change something (finer grind / less coffee vs coarser grind and more coffee).
I also have hardly had the same beans from my local roaster at all in the last 2 or so months, not that I dont like any of them, I have liked most (except a single origin PNG which didnt make such a flash base to my latte but was a good espresso bean) but the variety you can enjoy is just fantastic.
As your pennance you need to write -
I will not consume stale beans again
1000 times

Re: SUNBEAM em6910 flow issues?
absolutely anger management!
would u agree then that i should try and have my coffee coming out at the gauge cal check spot that I got (between the yellowish and orangish) rather than at the Brown spot?
at brown its still way better than before but obviously not as free flowing as the gauge cal check point. Id say maybe 30mls in about 45ish.
Next time im getting straight up colombian supremo
by the way why anger management? you dont seem too angry to me especially for a coffee drinker lol ;D

Just got my beans!!!
Wow THEY WERE FAST!
So got the colombians from ebay that link that i posted and they were very informative and helpful. It was sent overnight via toll. Total cost ~$27 for 1 kg express overnight courier.
Threw all the other crap out. Cleaned the grinder out. Dumped everything out.
Put in my new beans. 1st grind at 12 and WOW tons of creme and good aroma. Second setting at 10 and again excellent result. 3rd setting at 8 good solid fill solid tamping and voila hit the mark (based on the gauge cal check posted by anger management) -mine being between the yellow and orangish section-.
I am now sipping on an awesome cup of capacuino with FULL creme fresh colombian and a heart shape which i could never manage before but now easy.
THIS IS DELICIOUS AND YES IM EXCITED. The smell, the colour, the taste, the creme this is what its supposed to be like!!! mmmmmm continuing sipping mmmmmmm
THANKS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH GUYS!
So what was that you said about the BEANS
Great to see that it was not the machine but remember the Grind / Tamp will need to be reviewed for every batch of beans and depending on how long 1Kg lasts. You may even need to adjust by 1 click down towards the end.. A different batch of beans from a different supplier = Grind / Tamp will need to be reviewed again.
At teh end of the day, great to see you enjoying the coffee...

Surely if it is struggling to force the water through, the pressure guage should be indicating accordingly.
I think that this is further evidence that the best accessory for the guage is a strip of masking tape.
Thoughts ?
Get your Beans, Grind and Tamp right and then take note of the gauge position... It will then let you know (change in position) if you method is consistent or not... Ie. change any one of the 3 and get out of balance - it will change.
Have you cleaned your steam wand yet ?
lol Yes I have Thoroughly cleaned it

Yes do.
Sometimes Id get to work and find the steam wand filthy because of the late shift pigs.
All the chrome has now been eaten away.
