  • Silvia squeaky steam knob & leaking steam wand

    Hi All,

My Silvia is coming to around 10 months of age.

The steam knob is giving this loud squeak noise when I turn the steam on and off.

Also only recently I have noticed that the steam wand is leaking when the steam knob is fully tighten.

So my question, how does one remove these two issues?

Thats interesting - mine did pretty much same thing. I headed down the path of changing the washers, but when i pulled the valve apart, a sliver of metal was trapped in the washer - once removed, no squeaks and no leaks - that was probably 2 years ago. If you need to dissassemble steam valve, I found this link v good http://groups.google.com/group/alt.c...7dc0340993a0e5

        Has anyone else experienced this?

I have not had the time to look at removing the steam value...

Heres another helpful webpage -- this one has photos.

But -- having gone thru this, successfully I thought, I am sad to report that my Silvia does still dribble from the steam wand when pulling a shot, unless I give it a severe twist. :-/

But at least it (mostly) doesnt drip otherwise.

Never had the squeaking problem tho, so no idea about that.

I had my Silvia for about 6.5 years, and in that time I rebuilt the steam valve once (should have been twice, but I let it go a long time before I got to it.).

I polished off the stainless steel seat and of course changed the seat gasket and the O-rings. When reassembling I used a bit of silicone, high temp, food grade grease on the O-rings. After that the valve worked like new. If you have to still crank down hard on the valve then it could be the wrong seat gasket was used or it was an old one out of the stock that got hard sitting on a shelf... just a guess.

Yes, did the gasket & the 3 o-rings, with the silicone grease as suggested by another CSer at the time.

I did wonder about the replacement gasket tho -- it seemed to be a completely different material from the original (ordinary black rubber as opposed to the green-gray high density stuff), and not the same thickness either. Some cheap "after-market" substitute, perhaps?
