  • sticky Silvia steam valve

Ive had my Silvia now for about 8 months and mostly it works pretty well. One problem though: the steam valve is a bit sticky to the extent that at first I didnt realise how far it could open. Is this a flaw, or something that will wear in, in time? I expected it to be a smooth screw thread like action, not something that feels a bit like taking a bent screw out of sticky plastic.

My Silvia is quite a bit older than yours, and the steam valve is relatively free but does squeak a bit, and will leak a bit if not re-tensioned when cold. And the squeak could be quite annoying if you let it....
Is the stickyness the same when cold as it is when hot?
I havent had the steam valve apart on mine so not sure where it could get sticky, but there will be someone else on here that will have a better idea.

My ex-Silvia was similar worked fine but was always a bit tight from new. Last week I replaced the o-rings and washer, this improved performance and the valve had plenty of play at the front end again. Its an easy task to replace, a bit fiddly with my stumpy fingers but manageable. I always needed to tighten valve in morning after last use as contraction and cooling leaves it open a little and it dribbled as it heated up.

Pretty much the same at all times. It feels like a dodgy screw thread. Open it a few turns. Smooth. Continue turning. Rough. Continue turning. Smooth.

It also sometimes leaks a bit on first getting the temperature up after being off but not consistently enough to be sure its not just that I didnt tighten it off enough after switching off.

the valve needs a service in all cases

          food grade high temp grease

or return under warranty for the supplier to fix
