  • Question about Lelit machines

    Hello!

I’m hoping you can help me with a small problem of mine. I’m taking a barista course next week, and the people behind it will be offering us to buy a Lelit PL 55 espresso machine at a greatly reduced price, slightly below a Rancilio Silvia. The thing is, the Lelit machines are virtually unknown in my country (Sweden) so getting user information is very difficult. From what I can see, they’re quite known elsewhere, so hopefully you can give me some insight as to whether or not the PL 55 is on a par or better than a Silvia.

I’m also a bit worried about the steam part of the machine, which on the product information site has a white plastic piece on it that I’m guessing is a turbo part, which I hear is not a good thing to have, do you agree? I’ve read that it has a rather odd filter dimension, 57mm or something, while others use 58? Any information you could give me would be greatly appreciated!

Bottom line, should I buy this instead of a Silvia?

    Re: Question about Lelit machines

    Welcome Zohrath.... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

From what I understand, Lelit themselves are not a manufacturer as such but source machines of particular specifications from actual manufacturers and then put their badge on the product. Pretty common occurrence these days and not just with coffee hardware of course.

All that aside the PL55 appears to be a well specified and manufactured machine, a bit reminiscent of some Ascaso machines and even one of BFCs home machines. Ive owned and used a very similar machine in the past, as have many other members of this forum, and on the whole, they have an awful lot going for them as far as build quality and component selection goes. If you do your part and also use freshly roasted, high quality beans only ground immediately before brewing, you will enjoy some truly excellent espresso.

Im not sure where this particular PL55 machine sits with respect to a Rancilio Silvia in the overall scheme of things though, I guess comparative pricing would provide some sort of guide. On its own merits though, Im sure it will perform well up to the marque.... 8-)

    Cheers,
    Mal.
