  • Silvia: Is this machine right for me?

    Hi Guys,

I pretty much have my mind set on the Silvia + Rocky combo, however after reading a fair bit on the site, I’m starting to have some doubt.

My only concern about this machine is the warm up time.  Currently I have the Breville 800ES which is pretty quick to get going (around 5mins or less), however from what I’ve gathered from the site, the Silvia could take up to 20-30 to heat up!!  What should I do?????

    - Are there other machines sub $1,000 that are as good as the Silvia?
    - Or must I change my morning routine to get the Silvia?  I need that extra 20-30 minutes of sleep

    Cheers,

(I drink milk base espresso, pulling 1-2 shots max/day)

A timer power point is all you need as many other CS members do

You need to allow the heat to penetrate all of the brew path

    Unless you want yucky coffee

However there is on the WWW a method to speed things up by running hot water through the brew head several times

Get a timer. Cheap as chips. You just need to make sure the steam valve is closed tight the night before - so no water leaks out when you are sleeping.

As per any number of posts...

        There are pros and cons...

1: Warm up is an issue for all, but less of a problem for Thermoblock system..

It does not mean that a warm up is not required... Just less usually.. Some boiler systems are OK on a timer..

2: Functionality Vs Ease of use

        3: Milk Vs Black

4: Numbers to be made etc

5: Long term goal... Re sell or just put to teh side and upgrade

I am sure you will get more feedback soon...

Some systems require a blead to come to temp correctly... Options availabe to resolve this... After market stuff on some, others built in..

Yeah but for the silvia it just isnt a problem as it doesnt have false pressure problem because it uses a thermostat (or pid if upgraded). Both work of temp not pressure. The silvia does have the problem of not self priming but this really isnt that hard to manage.

Consider up to Temp compared to stable operating temp. The boiler will only take 10 minutes or less to hit the mark and be fairly stable but the group is a different matter.

It is possible to cheat the group by running a couple of empty shots through the empty basket. Generally then your warmup could be 10-15 minutes to get a reasonable shot. This is what I used to do to my Solis for a hurry.

On the Silvia a timer will work too.

Apart from that grab a Syphon, brewed and drinking in 5 or 6 minutes for a great brewed coffee

Thanks guys for the feedback.   The timer is a great idea for a quick morning get away, and the cheat guide will be handy for a quick shot on the Sunday afternoon :P.

Hopefully I can score a good deal from one of the site sponsor.

Just switch the silvia on first thing, then go have your shower, breakfast, get dressed etc and by then it should be at a good temperature.

Ill second this suggestion. I switch on Siliva, then have a shower and get dressed. By the time I have got my cups ready, poured some milk etc. then run an empty shot or two she is ready.

I wasnt sure about the heatup time when I first got mine, but I dont really notice it anymore. I know how long I need and flick it on. If I need a very quick coffee, thats where my aeropress comes in...

                            Hello SPL.G

Silvia does not take 20 to 30 minutes to warm up to operating temperature.

My personal opinion is it is the "best" machine under a thousand dollars. "Best" has a lot of different meanings, more than just to refer to the quality of the coffee. I would say it is one of the easiest or simplest to service, and will have parts availability for many years. It performs extremely well and can cope with small dinner parties.

Dont let stuff written on the net scare you, it is very very good.

                            Regardz,

So "warmup" is generally roughly how long if youre not running a couple of empty shots through the group head?

                              ~15-20 mins?
