Silvia + Rocky ‘09 ordered.  Thanks guys for the help..

How much you reckon I can get rid of my old Breville 800ES and the grinder for?  It’s still less than 6 months old… but the coffee quality is pretty weak hence the upgraditis.  :-X

It performs extremely well and can cope with small dinner parties.
I personally disagree with this statement. Ive owned one and it will not cope with a "small" dinner party....unless the dinner party is a party of 2 people. The Silvia is simply too slow.....unless your guests are willing to wait and you want to spend a lot of time away from entertaining your guests.

just wait until upgraditis kicks in and you decide to get a machine with a 2+ Litre boiler....then you definitely need that timer or be organised enough to flick the switch an hour or more before you want coffee or just leave it on permanently!
    I disagree Alistar.
My Expobar has a 2l boiler and it is boiling before the kettle.
However to get the whole machine up to temp I prefer to have it switched on an hour before.

15-20 mins to wait is nothing....just wait until upgraditis kicks in and you decide to get a machine with a 2+ Litre boiler....then you definitely need that timer or be organised enough to flick the switch an hour or more before you want coffee or just leave it on permanently!

Good luck with the purchases....My first machine was the Silvia and I remember it with fondness - quick heat up time, great quality, potential for great shots, good investment!

The Rocky grinder is also very much up to the job. It has its quirks but just like the Silvia you get to know them very well, very quickly!

    All the best!

[edit] - I see Greg Pullman already suggested this in the other linked thread. PIDKits should have tried profiling with the 2nd steam shot as Im confident that the machine would be fully up to temp with that.
Based on the results using just one steam shot, Im sure you are correct.

You can steam cheat to speed up the process even more.

Just turn on the machine, lock in the empty PF, prime it and then switch immediately to steam mode. When it indicates the boiler is at steaming temp, switch back to brew mode and immediately pull a steam shot through the empty PF until the water coming through is no longer boiling. Switch back to steam mode and repeat. The machine and PF should be fully up to temp.

I used to do this with may Gaggia Classics and could get the machine fully to temp in about 3.5 minutes from cold. The solenoids didnt seem to mind it at all.

I would have to support the couple of posts that say they dont really notice the warm up time any more. When I considered upgrading my machine, the thought of having to wait for the Silvia to warm up, nearly stopped me from buying one. However, the good simply outweighed the bad in my book, so took the plunge. Best thing I have done. Its a great machine, and to overcome the wait, just switch it on first thing i.e. as soon as you get up in the morning as others have said, as soon as you get home from work- get changed say gday to others in the household & machine is ready, as soon as visitors arrive who may want a coffee- by the time you greet them, get them seated etc, machine is ready. Doesnt take long to get into a routine. Dont let this one factor put you off buying a terrific little machine.

So "warmup" is generally roughly how long if youre not running a couple of empty shots through the group head?

    ~15-20 mins?

    Hello SPL.G

Silvia does not take 20 to 30 minutes to warm up to operating temperature.

My personal opinion is it is the "best" machine under a thousand dollars. "Best" has a lot of different meanings, more than just to refer to the quality of the coffee. I would say it is one of the easiest or simplest to service, and will have parts availability for many years. It performs extremely well and can cope with small dinner parties.

Dont let stuff written on the net scare you, it is very very good.

I wasnt sure about the heatup time when I first got mine, but I dont really notice it anymore. I know how long I need and flick it on. If I need a very quick coffee, thats where my aeropress comes in...

Just switch the silvia on first thing, then go have your shower, breakfast, get dressed etc and by then it should be at a good temperature.
Ill second this suggestion. I switch on Siliva, then have a shower and get dressed. By the time I have got my cups ready, poured some milk etc. then run an empty shot or two she is ready.

Thanks guys for the feedback.   The timer is a great idea for a quick morning get away, and the cheat guide will be handy for a quick shot on the Sunday afternoon :P.

Hopefully I can score a good deal from one of the site sponsor.
Strike NOW... At least one sponsor is almost giving them away as a clearance..
