  • Silvia showerscreen disturbing the puck

    Hi guys,

I just got my hands on an 08 slivia and have not been able to get a good shot from it yet. What seems to be happening is that the bolt on the showerscreen in indenting the puck when attaching the PF. This is using the double filter basket that came with the Rancilio, using two level scoops from the supplied scoop, and tamping with a 58mm solid stainless tamper from coffeeparts.com.au.

The pour is way too fast (even when using a very fine grind setting) which would tend to indicate chanelling? Note the indentation occurs before water is passed through the coffee (not due to expansion of the grinds).

    has anyone experienced similar problems?

The indent should be by a whisker at most after tamping, or even just missing.

    1: What grinder

    2: What beans

3: Where did you get them

4: When did you get them..

Odds on the issue is your method, not the machine...

Please refer to my website, in the right-hand column, in the "How Tos" section.. read 312 there. Among many other things, it refers to this very problem in great detail and includes diagnoses as well as solutions.

also to answer the questions above:

            1. Am using a sunbeam EM0480 (grind setting 8)
2, 3, 4. Using an espresso blend from merlo coffee in brisbane (about a week old)

            cheers

Re: Silvia showerscreen disturbing the puck

The problem could well be your grinder - you may need to add a washer/spacer to recalibrate it. Have you ever been able to get decent pours with beans ground with this grinder? Its a well known issue with the Sunbeam grinder (although fairly easily fixed) - check the em0480 threads in the grinder section or just call the sunbeam customer help line and tell them that you cant grind finely enough and they will send you a washer or two with instructions on how to install.
What youre experiencing can also be a result of stale beans - are the beans 1 week post purchase, or 1 week post roast?
Finally, Randys website is http://www.espressomyespresso.com/. Theres a wealth of useful info there.

Re: Silvia showerscreen disturbing the puck

Lots of good advice offered here. I did find my shots improved once I replaced that hex head bolt with a countersunk screw as described here

LOL. .thanks. didnt think of that # key.... Umm. modifying the screw bolt is not an option for me at this stage... Ill try to work on the grind adjustment and tamping etc..

Once you do decide to go this way, Id recommend going with a s/s "M5 X 12 G304 S/S CSK SOC SCREW" such as can be found here... http://tinyurl.com/pg5m48

A much better option going with these rather than a Philips Head or Slotted Head screw.

                        Mal.

One of the bad things about changing to an aftermarket screw in my opinion is, they are not tested to withstand high temperature / wet condition etc (or maybe they have but how can you be sure?).  What about the Rust?  Yikesss……

SS, even the poorer grade is up to the work that it will receive in a shower screen..

I tend to go for a SS CS Allan key as even when they get locked in (Opp dont ya hate that) you can apply more torque with an allan key and in the worse case, if you remove the head and need to drill out... It is easy to get the center and less mucking about...

Would not use brass for many reasons and if you used a standard bright steel screw.. The you get what ya deserve

                              Gday SPL.G,

I have an engineering background mate so wouldnt recommend something to you that wasnt at least the equal but preferably superior to the original.

By the way, the bolts that hold the Boiler together on Silvias (up until a couple of years ago anyway) are just black steel and subsequently corrode quite badly after a while. When you get around to having to replace your element (a long time from now hopefully), it is a good idea to replace these with s/s Socket Head Set Screws. A very cheap and worthwhile task also... 8-)

                              Mal.
