Re: What to buy, what to buy?

If your budgets a bit tight have a look at the Kyocera grinder thread running at presaent. They work really well at a range of grinds including espresso. Your Blade CHOPPER and dust creator wont be helping your current machine and will be worse than useless on standard baskets.

Put the money saved and you should get close to a new Silvia

Ooh where? Waiiit a minute :P whos selling that again. Its so shiny and pretty - i wish. so couldnt afford it.

Really annoyed because I saw a great condition Silvia/Rocky combo off Gumtree (would you believe it) and emailed straight away to say Id buy it but when I called to arrange payment he had already sold it. bah. heart-breaking.

Now I have to brave exam season with sub-standard coffee

    What can I say? :
Theres a really nice VBM Domobar Piccolo in the equipment for sale section.

Sigh--you really do need a grinder though, no matter how good the machine is, the coffee will be limited in quality by the grinder.

oh, on a side note, I went to BBB in Little Bourke and it was just AMAZING
Now you have done it to yourself snob for life, to complete the snobbing off to St Ali, Di Bella .......

Do you currently have a grinder? If not get one first and then save if required for a better machine would be the right order.

Plan a visit to a few of the Sponsors in your area to collect some info and have a play with some toys makes a lot of sense too.

So much to learn, it boggles the mind.

I make 2-4 coffees a day usually. Espresso for SO, doubleshot cap for me (though seriously, the espressos/espressi? from the Roma just tastes bitter/burnt/ to me and I just cannot drink that stuff). I guess its partly I use a chopper or spice grinder to grind, but even when I rush to the store and buy it freshly ground, it still tastes bad.

Will think about grinder upgrade. Sigh, could do with some KRudd dollars right about now...

    Hi Tashie,

Whether the Silvia is right for you will depend on a few factors, not least of which is how many coffees you make/how often/what type.

For a couple of lattes at a time, its a pretty good value proposition.

The quality of the coffee will be more to do with the grinder and your technique. If you can go to the next level grinder - say a Compak K3 Touch, over a Rocky, you wont be disappointed.

Is there ANY chance of getting similar coffee from a Silvia with good quality beans or am I just asking for too much?
The best place for detailed info on what you can get from a silvia have a look at Randy Gs website espressomyespresso. lot of info there but I found it very interesting.

    hi tashie,

to get the best advice, let us know your budget and what kind of usage you anticipate (factoring an increase when the quality improves ). i.e. espresso/milk based...how many in one sitting...etc.

generally, the rocky, iberital etc. are great and buying second hand is a good option. burrs last a long time and can be changed anyway. as long as it works and produces a consistent grind, second had machines are good value. that goes for quality espresso machines as well (silvia, vbm piccolo, etc.)

    good luck,

    sd

What to buy, what to buy?

    Hey all,

Unfortunately, I didnt get the benefit of KRudds stimulus package, but I am starting to get sick of my Cafe Roma and itching to get onto better coffee.

I am still quite confused as to what I should buy. Silvias seem to be hugely popular - is this the next step for me, or am I stepping too far/not far enough?

As to grinders, should I go for the matching Rocky or opt for a Lux or Iberital? I am so lost. I usually prefer to buy secondhand, but I do like them under warranty - plus most of these machines have really good resale value anyway.

    Any advice?

oh, on a side note, I went to BBB in Little Bourke and it was just AMAZING. Never understood why people pay for coffee til then. Aaah. Is there ANY chance of getting similar coffee from a Silvia with good quality beans or am I just asking for too much?

Thanks in advance to everyone who offers advice to a newbie.
