    Re: Is Lucy dead?

    All fixed
Great service from Coffee Parts and plenty of information here to learn how to replace the boiler.

    Time for a coffee.

    Pidkits is the next thing!

    Re: Is Lucy dead?

I think the water level indicator is in the plastic reservoir, not in the boiler.  With a Silvia/Lucy you must manually refill the boiler after steaming by running the pump.  The machine will not automatically refill its boiler, even when the reservoir is full.

So it is possible to have a low water level inside the boiler even when the level indicator is perfectly content.

I think I will get the parts and fix it myself this time.
Sounds like a good idea, its not that hard a job to do. Remember to get a new Oring when you get the new element/boiler.

I still dont understand though why the element failed. I thought as soon as the low water light comes on the power to the element is shut off so it doesnt keep heating. Ill have to keep an eye on mine.

Yes the low water level is still working.

Is the low water light going off now? I occasionally have some trouble with the pressure switch and it stops everything working even thought the water level is not to low.

Tested at 200 ohms and all thermostats read 0.5 (including the one I replaced) but the element has an open circuit so it is dead.

Should the repair be covered by warranty if the boiler is new?  I thought the Lucy and Silvia were protected by the resettable thermostat?
It should but it isnt perfect.

I have heard of people leaving the water low, the thermostat tripping, repeat several times and the element is blown. I am guessing that some will trip 10 times no problem, other times the element will burn out first go. Any time that the boiler is run dry and the element is on it will suffer some form of damage.
The safety thermostat is usually set at 140C. My Silvia is PIDed and I see it go higher than that without it tripping.

The element is designed to work in water, otherwise it will burn out. When I bought my Silvia the shop STRESSED the point of keeping the boiler primed for this reason. The warranty covered everything but this.

    Good luck.

I will try that soon - with power off

    Gday Mark,

Set your multimeter to resistance measurement.

Between the two element plugs should show about 50 ohm. If it shows open circuit then your element is likely to to be dead.

The thermostats should all show 0 ohm.

    Again POWER OFF!

I stuffed up my post a bit (lack of coffee!).

Is the safety thermostat supposed to protect the boiler etc?

Am i testing the thermostat or the element in the boiler?

Pretty sure that if it is blown then there will be no circuit so no reading. At least thats what it was like on an old machine of mine.

I am pretty sure that if one blows an element on Rancilio Miss Lucy than the whole boiler needs to be replaced

I thought the thermostat with reset would protect the element?

Have you blown the element again??

You can Check the resistance of the element with an ohmeter.
    Power off of course
Can you explain a bit more, I have access to a multimeter

    Is Lucy dead?

    Hi all!
Recently had my Rancilio Miss Lucy serviced and it was running well until I left it on with the water low and the warning light came on.  After this it wouldnt heat at all.  I have tried resetting the thermostat without luck so I got a new one and swapped and it still isnt heating.

When it was serviced they apparently replaced the boiler.

    Am I missing something??
Working...
