  • Silva miss match

    Hey CS’ers

I am looking for a new machine and would appreciate your advice.

    Money: $900 Max
    Location: Perth
Usage: Espresso / Latte; 2 – 3 cups per day
Current Equipment: Presso / Sunbeam EM0480
    Current Considerations: Silvia  / EM6910

    Questions:

    • Will the sunbeam grinder be sufficient for the Silvia and the 6910 until I can afford a grinder upgrade?

    • Is the EM6910 going to perform better coupled with my current grinder due to the fact that they are made to be used together?

    • Can anyone point me at a site sponsor or recommend a retailer located in Perth that sells the Silvia?

    • Is there any other machines given my usage and budget that I should consider?

    • What would be your rational for choosing either the Silvia or the 6910?

Any suggestions or advice will be greatly appreciated

    Thanks Deano

    No. Better than what?

Silvia for long term use and resale value.
6910 easy to use and some say is prettier.

      Hi Deano.... Welcome to CSs

Im in Perth and I know of 1 retailer who sells Rancilio here. That said I have recently purchased my new toys from one of the sponsors. Reasons being is the sponsors loyalty towards this wonderful site, support, reputation & they are very helpful. Im sure the after sales service is just as good as pre-sale. Not too mention it was cheaper for me inc freight

If you read thru some other threads Im sure youll see that the Rancilio range is not only well built but also very popular.

      Hope this helps.

      sm.

My rationale for choosing the Silvia over the Sunbeam...

The Silvia has a boiler...the Sunbeam pushes water through a tiny channel in a lump of metal...no other commercial machine does that to my knowledge.

I wanted a machine with a boiler, not a thermoblock.

I wanted a machine that more closely resembled a commercial machine, not an appliance.

I wanted something Italian...not Chinese...because I like my machines to have soul. Something that the Chinese have been unable to copy as yet. (dont get me started... :P )

So, I got a Silvia. Sure, has its moments but have yet to send it back to the maker to have it repaired/replaced/rebuilt and it was second hand when I got it!

What I can tell you about Sunbeams in general...

I have 3 very good coffee clients come to me regularly. All three have Sunbeams of various types in their homes. Two at least have EM6910s. One client has sent their machine back to Sunbeam more than three times. Another had their machine replaced 3 times before warranty expired (thats 12 months by the way!). The other is beginning to have slow down issues with steaming, possibly due to crud in the thermoblock channels.

To me, theres a huge reason to stay away from the Sunbeam (an appliance) over the Silvia (a coffee machine).

Of course, there is the thought that the Sunbeam is a very forgiving machine and you will be able to produce good coffee. The Silvia on the other hand requires love and patience and will produce outstanding coffee...

        Hope that helps...

Deano both are good machines and lots ppl here have both. The big issues for both have been touched on...
6910 good machine and forgiving but has reliability issues, wont last u many years and its resale value is low. However it is easy to use, can pull a shot and steam milk simultainously and is cheaper to buy than Silvia.
Slvia is a higher quality built machine, will last longer and has a great resale value. Downside is it is more tempermental and takes time to master, and can only pull shot or steam milk one at a time, it also have some issues with temperature of water coming put.
Read more of the forums on them. But all here consider the Silvia a much better machine (6910 is good though) and is a coffee machine not appliance .

              Re: Silva miss match

I had a Silvia/Rocky for over five years and it was great

I now have the EM6910 which I have used with Rocky, the EM0480 and Compak K3 Touch.

The Sunbeam combination worked extremely well producing coffee as good as and sometimes better than Silvia.

I bought the K3 because I believe it is more consistent than the EM0480, but upon reflection I would have been just as happy and $400 richer had I kept the EM0480.

The EM6910 is easier to use and far more predictable than Silvia ever was, and mine had a PID. It is a joy to use.

There are a lot of satisfied Sunbeam users here who are not fussed that it uses thermoblocks instead of boilers.

The final test it in the coffee - and its great

                Re: Silva miss match

I am big fan of the Silvia. I have had one for the past few months and once you get into a routine, you will get impressive results almost every time.

Having said that, if you are not restricted in space and do not need to a new machine, there is a pristine Vibiemme in the hardware for sale section that is just over your budget.

This is a real step up for only a fraction more and may be something to consider! I know I would be tempted if I had a little more bench space!!

Good luck, and if you go with the Silvia, be sure to get some tips from the seller on how to use it.

Hi Deno, stay away from the Perth seller of Silvia, their after-sales service leaves a lot to be desired!!

                    Good call gm.

I had that impression pre-sale, hence me buying it thru a reputable sponsor

Hi Deano, I had my Sylvia for 10 wonderful years and then resold her for 68% of my purchase price. Along the way she taught me how to make wonderful espresso and inspired my love of coffee and shiny things that are expertly crafted.

Id agree with every comment on this thread. Theres a comparo of the Silvia and Em6910 at www.coffeetamper.com.au/**/reviews/sunbeam-silvia/ if you havent seen it yet, may assist with your choice (or that of anyone else reading this thread).
