    Re: Faema Family Re-born!

I recently purchased a Faema Family (1985 model) with original manual in good condition and want to thank you guys for high quality information posted here. I pushed 2/3 tank water through first time and the coffee produced on second run is reasonable. Pressure is fine. I will upgrade a few things based on the advice here (naked portafilter, etc)

QUESTION: I have a water leak (puddle each morning on bench towards back of machine) and am doing a visual check - but based on experience, what are common water leak points I should check?

    Hi Zecc,

enjoyed your rebuild: am wanting to do much the same as my FF urgently needs major rebuild and better temp controls - can you give details of the electronics box etc?

I also have a Faema Family and am wondering if you could point me in the direction of installing a PID. Did you follow any tutorials on the net? Any photos to share?
I got most of the hardware needed from ebay so it was fairly inexpensive - maybe $350 all up. The most expensive part was the custom made temp probe that I had to get made to replace the existing thermostat without modifying the boiler. Stupidly; I didnt take any photos of this. Onetemp in clayton made it for me - it is basically a 3mm probe with a 10mm disc welded around it about 60mm from the end. This then replaces the old thermostat and you use the existing lock nut to seal the disc into the boiler - damn pictures would tell the story much better!

The Powder coating I had done by ADA powder coatings in Thomas town - its a Dulux Onyx Black. I thought this was important to stop any corrosion of the body.

The coffee shoots great, and although the temp doesnt stay flat during the shot, it is much better than the old thermostat and you can taste it.

If you are interested in doing this, let me know and I can give you some advice. I did have a friend who is a qualified electrician do the wiring.

    Faema Family Re-born!

Well I did it, I totally stripped and powder coated my faema family with a slick Onyx black finish. But does it go as good as the paint job? After installing a PID and RTD it sure as hell does.

    The pics say it all:
