  • Can I get something decent for $600?

    Hi all,

Im new to this site. what an amazing site.

Im looking at getting a new machine.
I have the Breville Roma at the moment, pretty dodgy little thing.
but ready to get something more decent.

Would $600 be able to get me some decent, and Ill need grinder as well.
Should I be looking for some second Silvias or something.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Thanks all

What coffee style is your favourite
If its espresso then you would be hard pressed to find a machine & grinder combo for $600

A machine only option is a good little but hands on performer is the Nemox Fenice

If you like good coffee thats not espresso style you cant go past the Kyocera grinder/Aeropress combo

Note always use fresh coffee thats freshly ground for best taste & results

        Welcome Joyo.... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

As KK pointed out, the Fenice is an excellent machine and so close to the performance of the Silvia that its almost indiscernible to most imbibers.... It also falls within your budget and due to their excellent build quality, return a very satisfactory sum when sold (should upgraditis bite sometime in the future). As we always say around here though, it doesnt matter how good a machine or what brew method you use, it is all for naught if you dont own a decent grinder and dont use freshly roasted, high quality coffee.

        All the best

        Mal.

            Unfortunately no
Good entry machines are $600 to $1000

HX (heat exchanger) machines can cost a bundle
Some of us have spent upwards to 4 K   on machine & grinder combos just to get a good cup of coffee    :

But the non espresso path is the cheapest hence the Aeropress link for an alternative brew style, With a total outlay with hand grinder for under $150

If you dont mind grinding by hand, then the Kyocera is a very good option and one that will last you a long long time.  PLUS .. its portable.

The Burrs are made of an advanced, high-tech ceramic called zirconium oxide (also called zirconia). Zirconium oxide is extremely hard, wear resistant, and chemically inert. For the technically minded, zirconium oxide has a hardness of 8.2 mohs (vs. steel at 5-6 mohs and diamond at 10 mohs).

Heres CS member  Doug81s Kyocera teamed with a Silvia

Finally got around to testing this grinder with the Silvia. First 2 attempts choked it up good, but I got a shock on the 3rd try when I pulled a bloody god shot!!! One of the best shots Ive done with this machine, it funnelled beautifully and the whole shot was full of crema, settling to a nice layer afterwards. Not much in the way of fines in the cup, and tasted great! Not sure if its a fluke or not, will be trying it out again later. Not ready to give up my mazzer just yet, but its good to know that if its out of action for servicing or whatever then I can still grind for a great coffee. if it works on the Silvia, itll work on anything!  ;D
