          Re: Rancilio Silvia

          Right..

Prices..hmm..not too sure what the market price would be for a second hand. But Id say maximum 700 for a second hand? Also preferably in Melbourne so seller can demonstrate machine and easier to get help etc if anything goes wrong with the machine.

Thanks Dennis for your pm. Have replied.

Off to my third coffee for today!

A brand new 2008 model goes for $729 plus 16.50 delivery metro Melbourne, or the 2009 model for $779 plus 16.50 8-)

              Re: Rancilio Silvia

Thanks Rusty. Im thinking second hand 2008 model is the way to go as buying a brand new 2008 model will not be worth it since the 09 model is out. Resale value for my future 2008 model will be pressed by the 09 model I assume. So yeah, still deciding. Any thoughts?

              Location: Melbourne.

You could consider the Sunbeam EM6910. It performs as well as a PID Silvia and has a good following her on CS ;D

I used the PID Silvia for over five years and upgraded to the Sunbeam. I find it easier to use and so far it is more consistent.

                  Re: Rancilio Silvia

Ive never heard of ppl switching from Silvia to Sunbeam. Wow, you are the first. Why would you say the silvia is harder to use than the Sunbeam? I did consider sunbeam but thought silvia is a longer term investment as it would last longer than the sunbeam.

Yes, I do expect it to outlast the Silvia and to have a greater resale value. But the bottom line should be about producing enjoyable coffee

Even with the PID I found Silvia unpredictable compared to the Sunbeam. Now that may mean that Rocky wasnt the best grinder for Silvia despite being from the same stable, its adjustment may have been too coarse.

Without the PID Silvia was a temperamental beast :-/

I believe Silvia has a cult following which overlooks her shortcomings - a sort of love is blind syndrome I was enamored of her charms for many years :

On the other hand maybe I just didnt understand her

Anyway, lets see what flack this post attracts.

                      Thats confusing!

The Silvia will outlast the Sunbeam. No question.

The Silvia will have a re-sale value. The Sunbeam is not as likely to hold any notable value.

I used to own a Silvia, and I agree that they can be a bit finicky, but I think it contributed greatly to my coffee making process.

The sunbeam certainly appears to do a good job, and is reasonable value, but it is still an appliance in my opinion and I will be interested to see how many Sunbeams are still in active service at the 5 years old mark.

                      Brett.

Man this is a tough choice. I guess best offer that comes by first will get me in. Sunbeam or Rancilio. Does anyone know where the Sunbeam is made in? I know for a fact the Silvia is made in Italy which is why I thought it may be a better investment long term.

I have a few friends who would argue that principle

It cant be made based on theory

You need to try both machines to come to a sound conclusion - and then it will be entirely up to your taste, not based on others opinions :
