This function is great when making a lot of coffees cause you dont have to worry about the pour as much while steaming the milk
I always worry about the pour.

    Did the experiment this morning.

Made a double using the 2 cup button. Reasonable pour and it ran for 27 seconds.

Knocked the puck out and ran the 2 cup button with no coffee in it.

    15 seconds.

    It doesnt run by time...

I think the 6910 tries to pour automatically by volume but isnt quite perfect.
If you grind too fine (takes a lot longer) too coarse (takes less time) and the volumes change slightly but not too bad

Mine gave a little more than 30ml at a 25 sec pour using the single basket but pretty close. The double did the same (slightly more than 60ml) I imagine all machines will be different though.
This is easy to adjust (see manual)

This function is great when making a lot of coffees cause you dont have to worry about the pour as much while steaming the milk

Actually TG I think you will find it is volume.

The 6910 doesnt measure by volume but by time AFAIK.
Actually TG I think you will find it is volume.

On a crap grind/level/tamp yesterday morning the time of the shot on the 2 cup button was down by around a third.

What that volume is (including soak volume) is probably anyones guess. I have never actually measured the shot volume.

And yes I was being lazy/late for work using the 2 cup button... ;D

Do I need to measure that the 30ml shot that the EM6910 apparently produces on its programmed mode is actually 30ml?
The 6910 doesnt measure by volume but by time AFAIK.
You can check it by hitting the button and just running water through without the handle or any coffee in the way.
You should get more than 30ml because the coffee will soak some up.
Close enough should do because once youve got it all sorted you can program the buttons for the volume you want.

I dont bother and always use the manual button.

Re: Sunbeam EM6910 newbie - advice for first fire-up?

Well, very exciting - all set up and ready for the morning. I got home to find the big boxes waiting, and the wife said "Im going to the gym - you play with the toys" (meaning, "get that stuff ready to make me a good coffee in the morning!")

Unpacked it all, set it up, and spent an hour and about 6 shots, watching the "mouse tails", extraction meter, stop watch, and pour colour. I think Ive got far enough to be ready for the morning brew (which will save me a trip up to the local bakery. Theyre going to miss me!)

I used to make a mug of latte for us each on my Krups Orchestro, so Im using the double basket and the two-cup program button for now. Grinding on 6 on the 480 using reasonably fresh beans - tamping hard - warm cups and warm/clean group head - the "auto grind" function on the 480 is fantastic and saves a lot of mess.

Black gold pours out into the glass, looking like a guiness with deep golden swirls rising up to settle on the top - the biggest crema Ive ever made.

Textured the milk (bit more practice needed there - 6910 seems to need a bit of time to work up to full pressure?), into the cup, stir in a sugar - bingo!

Then the BIG test - "Here honey - taste that and see what you think" (as she had just arrived home from the gym). Its a winner! Thumbs up and smiles. Final accolade "Ill just have one more sip - no, damn it, Ill have the lot!"

    Photo of the setup attached.

Thanks for all your advice, folks - very welcoming and very helpful.

    Cheers

    Cameron

Welcome to CS Cameron. You will find a wealth of information here. Make the search function your friend.

Good advice already about reading the manual and using fresh beans.

The EM0480 grinder can suffer from inconsistant/course grinds straight out of the box which can be remedied by obtaining free spacers from Sunbeam which go under the bottom burr. If it doesnt come with the silicon snout get one of those as well as it will reduce the mess.

The pour guide is just that.. a guide. Experiment and find out what works best for you and then you can program the shot buttons to suit or do what a lot of us do and use the manual button while watching the pour and colour. 8-)

Cameron, play play and play a little more! Lots of fun to be had! Took me a couple of days before i was happy with everything. As for the programmed shot button. I did the course and we were basically told to go by the colour of the shot and the extraction itself. Some will no doubt tell you otherwise but i find this works best for me. Its the manual button all the way!

Dont get disheartened if you dont make a perfect coffee first up. It took me a day or so, with fresh beans, good grinder etc before I started to nail it. Practice practice practice.
Lover it now, so does the wife.

    Hi Cameron,

You really need to do an essentially non male thing - read the manual ;D

They do tell you to run some water through it first from memory, but just follow the basic guidelines they give and work from there.

I am sure having done a barista course you should have it firing pretty quickly.

Rule No 1 that you will find around here is - use fresh beans

    Without that, no chance.

The Sunbeam free course is worthwhile if you have the time as well as it is a little machine specific, so you can get the best out of it.

    Happy travels.

    Chris

Oh, and welcome to CS 8-)

Sunbeam EM6910 newbie - advice for first fire-up?

    Hi all,

After doing the excellent Home Barista course at Bellaroma Manly Vale, I realised I needed to ditch my (until now) excellent Krups Orchestra fully automatic monster and down-size to something I can control a little better. The Krups made pretty good coffee given I only had to hit one button to produce an espresso, but up against the EM6910 at the Barista course I realised what I was missing out on.

DJs will be delivering the EM6910 plus its partner in crime, the EM0480 grinder - TODAY! Very excited. NOW I can churn out a coffee the wife is sure to drink, like, and keep coming back for more.

    QUESTION

Any tips on what to do or try when I first fire the pair of them up? I know Im going to blow a lot of coffee beans getting the grind right, practicing the tamp, etc. Do I need to measure that the 30ml shot that the EM6910 apparently produces on its programmed mode is actually 30ml? (wheres that damned medicine cup now?)

Cheers all -thanks for your advice in advance.

    Cameron
