Looks like Im spot on with my loading. I havent pulled out a stopwatch or measuring device, but it also looks like Im in the ballpark with the 25 sec. 30 ml shot. More blind luck than anything, but a win is a win - Ill take em when I get em. Bottom line is coffee tastes great - just gotta work on the milk steaming bit. Regards, CV
Grind fresh beans.
Fill basket and then tamp firmly.
Put a 5 cent coin on top of the coffee.
Lock basket in machine.
Unlock and remove the coin.
It should be pushed ONLY lightly into the coffee to guarantee the correct amount of grounds.
Use this amount of coffee (by volume) and adjust the grind to get your 25 second pour for 30-50 ml--depending on how bitter you like your brew.
mate enjoy the journey!! Keep working on your tamping, dosing and grinding. How long is it taking for 30mls? should be 25-30 seconds. to adjust work on grinding (finer- to pull slower, and courser to pull faster). The tamping will make a difference too- harder pull slower and vise versa.
As far as an indent does from the screw on the shower screen, you should be able to put a 5 cent piece in and it should leave a slight indent.
Thanks Reubster - and other posters. Ive upped the dose, puck dry and great shots. Currently enjoying PNG Sigri from my local: Beans coffee roastery in Fitzroy. Very good drop. Regards.

Only gripe is puck is still a bit wet - depression present at the top of puck though. I guess Im dosing and tamping ok. I might try dosing slightly higher and increase the fineness 1 notch on the grinder.
This suggests a slight underdose.
Try the same dose you have been using, insert the PF then remove it.
Do you see the screw indentation?
Once water has hit the puck it wil expand, so you really need to check the indent before pulling the shot.
Obviously you may also require a courser grind if you up the dose.
CharlieVee,
I will be taking delivery of Miss Silvia this week and will be using a 480 for the grind. Dennis from Cuppacoffee helped me out with a good deal.
Send any tips you may have my way. I was going to take it into Di Bella here in Brisbane as I understand they offer a free lesson for CSs.
I think youre so right scoota gal - a Rocky would be great, but Im going to do a bit more research. Im very happy with my first efforts from miss Silvia. Need more beans ...Regards. CV
Yep - took the lucky gal home earlier today - many thanks to Chris at Talkcoffee. I was hoping I was going to get pretty good shots straight away with no fiddling - and I did pretty well. My grind is pretty fine - no 4 on the Breville 0450 and time is good. Crema good as well - could be better. Only gripe is puck is still a bit wet - depression present at the top of puck though. I guess Im dosing and tamping ok. I might try dosing slightly higher and increase the fineness 1 notch on the grinder. What a great afternoon to spend on an RDO ! Regards.
