Re: New Gaggia Classic owner
Na I dont think it will. I think thats exactly how it should be done.
So it should go something like:
Gaggia steam pipe
Brass Connector
Gaggia o-ring
silvia steam wand lip (for want of a better term!)
silvia o-ring
Or something like that. Glad to hear its a little more snug!

Re: New Gaggia Classic owner
After reading the Mod thread once more, I removed the steam arm this morning and removed the o-ring that was in the machine itself. Presumably this was on the old steam arm. I removed it and placed it on the silvia arm where it inserts into the brass adaptor. This is a lot more snug now but my question is - will it be detrimental to the machine not having that o-ring where it was?

Re: New Gaggia Classic owner
Thanks for your help. Im inclined to leave it as the foam that Im producing is far superior to the old Sunbeam EM3600 machine that I previously used. So rapt about this machine. Was going to get a Silvia but was able to score this for around the $200 mark

Re: New Gaggia Classic owner
Im pretty sure I had exactly the same problem when I first installed mine. I ended up tightening it so much that I killed the o-ring. After replacing the o-ring with Im pretty sure, a slightly larger one, it moved a lot better.
I have ended up removing the brass connector due to the fact that it was impossible to remove the water tank and gone with effectively the same design as outlined in the Gaggia Steam Replacement Mod thread. Initially, it was really stiff (almost couldnt move it), but with a little bit of filing/sanding - it now works a charm.
So - I think it must be that upper o-ring which is causing the problem. I vaguely remember someone commenting in another thread that there was a few o-ring issues with this mod.
Any way, if you can be bothered, pop into bunnings or a plumbing store or something like that and get a slightly larger (fatter) o-ring and see if that does the trick. Shouldnt cost you much and may make a big difference.
Other option is you leave it if you dont mind it!!
let us know how you go
Cheers,
Ben

Re: New Gaggia Classic owner
Just the arm. Just removed it before and reattached it. On the arm itself there are two o-rings. One at the base where the lip runs around the top of the steam arm (about a cm or so from the top) and another which, I assume, goes at the top of the steam arm. I placed this over the top of the arm and inserted into the brass adaptor (the one that screws into the Gaggia machine). This seems to fit snuggly so that you can then tighten the larger silver nut onto the brass adaptor. This worked ok until i gave it a jiggle. The o-ring at the top pops off and just sits between the steam arm and the adaptor. I think this is why it jiggles. Am i on the right track? Might have to try and get some photos.

Re: New Gaggia Classic owner
Up and down is a concern. Is the whole steam system (including internals) moving, or just the arm itself?

Re: New Gaggia Classic owner
I have used it twice more since my first post. It is steaming and quite well i might add. The connections you mentioned are well tightened and its just the arm itself that is a bit loose. When i say loose, you can move it up and down reasonably easily.

Re: New Gaggia Classic owner
Markso - welcome and congrats on your purchase!!
If the steam arm is REALLY loose, I would check the o-ring inside to make sure you havent damaged it in the process of installing. Otherwise you can just tighten the connection between the silvia arm and the brass connector.
Both the connection between the silvia arm and the brass connector, and the brass connector and the gaggia component should be well tightened, without straining the steam pipe within the gaggia (if you tighten too much then you are applying a torque to the gaggia internal components and straining them in a way in which they shouldnt be strained!)
Any way, let us know how you go.
Cheers,
Ben

New Gaggia Classic owner
Just taken delivery of a second hand Gaggia Classic. I ordered the Rancilio steam wand from Di Bartolis and fitted it this morning. I also own a Sunbeam 0480 Grinder. Just have a couple of qs:
1. The steam arm (rancilio one that is) seems to be quite loose. My first steam attempt with it went well. The fitting to the machine is quite tight and isnt leaking steam/water. Is this normal?
2. How tight should the fitting to the machine be?
I think it is ok but thought i would check with those who have done this mod.Tags: None
