  • Silvia - Rotary Pump?

Anyone ever fit a rotary pump to a Silvia?

Sounds like fitting an aftermarket turbo to my diesel landcruiser.

Actually they have a lot in common, the Silvia and the Standard Landcruiser - basic, solid, easily serviced and functional.

    Hi ss,

In my opinion a complete waste of time for very little result (if any) in the cup.

If you want rotary, I reckon buy a machine with one!

Personally, I wouldnt bother.... All that added complexity for no identifiable return?

Not practical from any number of standpoints and as 2mcm says, you wont notice any difference in the cup, where it counts. Of course, yes, you could do it just as a technical exercise but there are much better things you could do with the money and time expended.....

Procon on Pump in a Silvia is totally doable. I’ve already done it.

In case anyone is still interested (I know that this post is really old), I successfully modified a Silvia, with a GE 1/3 HP motor and Procon rotary vein pump. It took a fair while, but the footprint has not been altered one bit. The machine must run from mains water though, and a PID is not absolutely necessary, but is certainly beneficial.
I did this over 3 years ago and the machine runs fantastically. It has had every day use, since the mod.

I’m not really into coffee that much. I did this project as a birthday present for my mother. I haven’t given it much thought since, till I was talking to my mother and she asked me for some more photos of her machine, from various stages of the build (I always keep photos of my projects).
Apparently, she was talking to a coffee shop store owner or manager, while picking up some coffee from a place that also sells high end coffee machines. She mentioned what I built for her, and he couldn’t believe it (I’m not sure he even really believed her at this point). She ended up showing him a picture that she had on her phone that displays the machine without the back on it. She said that the look on his face spoke volumes and he is very keen to get some more photos. I had some trouble finding these photos, but I finally found them. I haven’t told many people before. Recently however, I spoke to 2 people who who tried to convince me that it was technically impossible (not enough real estate to work with). I had to burst their bubble by 100% confirming that it is not only possible, but has been done. I proved it by organising a cup of coffee be made for them with the Silvia...Pictures too...of course.
If anyone is interested, I can explain exactly what is required to make one. It is pretty involved, with a couple of things that could easily be overlooked.
The cost to do this project, was about $250. I got the pump and motor secondhand from the states for $150. The machine already belonged to my mother, which had a burnt out vibe motor at the time. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune, but is fairly time consuming. That being said, it would be a whole lot quicker if I was to do it again.

              Cheers...

By the way, I’m not talking about a machine displayed in the YouTube clip. This is a totally enclosed pump & motor.
Just in case there is any confusion.

Absolutely want to see this build!

Maybe start a dedicated thread on it. You need a few (10?) Before you can add pics.

1/3hp is 250w, pretty big motor for under the hood.

I think there should be something like this on the market.
All the available machines that have a rotary pump, need so much more bench space than a Silvia.
As soon as I am able to, I will add pics.
I’m glad to see that people are interested to see this build.
I was careful not to let my mum see me walk out with her Silvia in one hand and an angle grinder in the other..

Also, Yeah, it is a big motor...heavy too. The machine is so much heavier now.
I also had to make a new drip tray.
Once I can add photos, I can explain everything a lot better.
Don’t worry, it doesn’t look like a hacked up Silvia. It is totally neat and tidy...Inside and out.
